Long term oxygen therapy is normally used throughout the night in order to 'get in' the recommended 15hrs a day where as short burse or ambulatory oxygen is use as and when for less time. Some people require it for 24hrs a day. It's not any of my business as to how much or when the OP's MIL is using O2 but I just though it was worth checking the oxygen machine (concentrator) as this may be the reason for the high bills.
I didn't know if the OP was aware that the money paid for that can be claimed back.0 -

I don't really know if this could happen, but I wonder if one of these appliances is faulty and draining power constantly. I would unplug all overnight.
Cooker is not unplugged as it is wired in but it is switched off.
I am going to unplug everything tonight except fridge and freezers.
I have been thinking for a while that something could be draining power but not sure what to do about it, would a normal leccy be able to check or is it a specialised thing?

We have had the high usage long before the oxygen arrived.
The chap who installed it said it uses 1p an hour and we would automatically be reimbursed annually as it has a built in meter, I havn't checked it as I have no reason to doubt him but I will try and do it tomorrow to put your mind at rest lol
It is used as and when required but as she is not very mobile it is on from when she gets up till she goes to bed.

Sorry, I must stop posting before reading the thread in full. I see you have already said it's not on at night.:o
In my defence I have seen some real old machines that rattle away like old generators and I'm not convinced they are as economical as they should be.
Please except my apologies.0 -
kittywaa, I'm wondering if you have have a faulty frost-free fridge freezer? I believe they use a heating element to defrost the freezer.
No it's not, even the specifications in the user manual point this out.generaloneill wrote: »Owl is 100 percent accurate, assuming you have it clamped to the live feed.

At the minute the owl is showing .46 with the following
40" lcd tv with sky box
This laptop
Computer upstairs + wireless router
2 phones
4 energy saving bulbs dotted about
fridge
2 freezers
bulb in fire
Thats it, does it sound about right ?

No clock on the oven or microwave? How much of this usually gets left on/ standby overnight? Cos that reading for ten hours would roughly use up 5KWH if I have understood how the Owl works. And you may well have given us the reading at the very moment the two freezer thermostats were off.

Just a quick note to say that we also have an oxygen concentrator and they do indeed run at a penny an hour. Though we are lucky enough to get the money paid back to us once a quarter rather than yearly. Have you though about asking about payment more frequently than annually? We'd never cope having to wait a whole year for the money.0

5 watts rather than 5 kWh(i.e 5000watts) is more likely!!0 -

They'd have to be faulty to be responsible for much of the 5kwh. The 5kwh over a nine hour period is from reading the meter rather than the Owl monitor, as I understand it.
From what Bev has said, the Owl monitor seems to be more accurate than the meter.0
