  • Hi
The owl monitor isnt one that gives a total kwh used over a period, think that is the later model, the lowest I have got is .19 when I go to bed and everything is off.
I dont know how accurate it is but when I switch something on with a known wattage the owl seems to register about 30% less
Cooker, kettle, microwave, hoover all make it jump up but that is expected.
I dont use the dryer or dishwasher, not since I started this usage thing,
I hoover as little as I can get away with but we have 2 big doggies and 1 is moulting, I never iron, washer is on 3-4 times a week, although I dont get on with the 30 degree thing, we must be a mucky lot.
Only 3 adults in the house btw, me,hubby and the mil, no carbon fiends as you call them lol

When most people say they're using silly units and must have a faulty meter, I think it's more likely they're using silly units and have a normal meter. From what you say - no high use appliances, nothing registering as faulty when used on a plug in monitor, no heating or immersion, I can only think the meter must be faulty.

    Hi
Will do that tonight, can't really turn everything of in the day for an hour because of poorly MIL has to have central heating on ( electric pump ) also she needs oxygen but I will have a word and see if we can sort something.
Would 30 minutes be ok do you think.

Your house won't cool down noticably if the heating is off for one hour as there will still be hot water in the radiators, but you could try half an hour. Instead of turning all your bits and bobs off at the circuit breaker, turn everything off at the plug, nothing on standby (except the oxygen obviously!). Or if you have lots of separate fuses you could turn all of them off except the sockets and then try to unplug (virtually) everything else. You are basically trying to test out the system to see if either the meter still moves significantly when nothing/ just one item is switched on.

Do you use the heating and oxygen overnight? How many fridges and freezers do you have in use? Do you have any instructions for the oxygen machine or could you search for the model on the net? If so it may say the wattage - trying to convert one person's idea of cost to actual KWH is impossible to do sensibly.

  • We had a new meter last July,we have prepayment because of the big bills and it was changed to the new key meter from the card meter.
Then in January this year the changed it to a single rate meter as we didnt know we were on economy 7 but that is another story.
EON said we must have slipped through their system lol
I cant see how all 3 meters could be faulty but I suppose it is possible
  • We are in the process of changing to EDF and will save nearly £300.00 a year
but that doesn't help with the high usage.
We will then change to a normal meter and pay dd

    I agree, it seems unlikely.

Heating and oxygen are off overnight so will turn everything off tonight except frigde and freezer and read meter last thing tonight and in the morning.
Will check out oxygen machine wattage tomorrow but it shouldn't be a problem as usage didn't go up when it was installed
Thanks for all your help so far

From what you say (fridge and freezer use less than 2kwh a day combined), your meter should clock less than a single unit over a nine hour period. Yet, you say, it's five times this - doesn't make sense.

Doesn't make sense to me either, have learnt a lot from these boards.
3 months ago I didn't even know what a kwh was, and even thought everybody paid the same per unit lol
    Ignorance was bliss I think.
Well we will see what the meter says in the morning with just the fridge and freezers on overnight..

  • At the minute the owl is showing .46 with the following
40" lcd tv with sky box
    This laptop
    Computer upstairs + wireless router
    2 phones
4 energy saving bulbs dotted about
    fridge
    2 freezers
    bulb in fire
