    Hi Moneysavingme & other jobhunters.

I'm a manager of a high street retail store & just wanted to add that its a really bad time of year for jobhunters.

Most of us retailers are really really quiet at the moment and are working on core hours and are not recruiting at the moment.

It looks like you've been working really hard to get a job and the only thing I'd add is to concentrate on retail parks as they seem to be doing better at the moment. Also, anywhere that is open longer hours will, naturally, employ more staff. Its sometimes harder to get people to work evenings in shops so if you are willing to do this then that may help.

I'm always interested in flexibilty from my student workers. Those that put the hours they are willing to work on their covering letter interest me!! If they are willing to work sats/sun & late nights then they are much more flexible than someone who is only willing to work just saturdays.

Also, instead of dropping off a CV, be cheeky and ask for an application form to fill in for them to keep on file. Stores application forms gather the info relevant to the store so is sometimes better than a standard cv.

Its coming up to easter so some stores will be picking up - consider what stores get busy whilst the kids are off - WHSmiths, HMV, Clarks (A good one ;) ), Clarks depts inside mothercare world stores (they find it difficult to recruit as no-one ever thinks about them). These kinds of stores will be busiest when you are on college/uni holidays so will have extra hours for you to work so you can earn extra pennies.

Hope that help a little & good luck with the job hunting. Dont give up :D

ps, if my shop was in your area I'd be interviewing you now just for your determination - its good to see
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
  • im down in Kent - im hoping that i'll be able to get a job on one of the many holiday parks in the area, but i think that will only be for easter and the summer holidays, still, even if its not permenant its better than nothing.

I know that 17 year olds can work in bars when there supervised because they've done it in both bars where i've worked and currently work.

I'm gonna try the petrol station down the road... probably won't get anything but its worth a try.... love the smell of petrol lol

Found this website, dont know if its any help, in the London area

    http://www.arts.ac.uk/student/careers/1758.htm
  • out of curiosity i wonder if this will beat the current most posted thread on the student board.... current record is 101 n the top sticky.. havent managed to find a job yet but at least we can beat the student discount hunt :P
  • OK, another posting to boost the numbers.

Whilst you are looking, would you consider working as a volunteer in your local Oxfam or other charity shop? They'd be glad to have you, and then you would have some experience on your CV. And you'd be helping some of the poorest people in the world... :D
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • dont mean to sound insensitive, but if im not earning money from my time, i'll be revising for my exams (only 8 weeks to go :'()
  • Fairy nuff - I agree that spending time on your exams is probably the best investment you can make ;)

  • Agree, if i aint going to earn money then i think it is best to revise.

You can register your interest on the comet site even if there aren't any jobs near you listed.
  • lol, im at a disadvantage on the comet/business park front, the nearest comet to me is about 25 miles.... i think the only big companies near to me are tescos and woolworths, and neither are taking people on anyway.

the only advantage is the areas population doubles during the summer holidays with londoners, so im hoping that ill be taken on as a casual at one of the parks.
  • Good luck, nothing like that near me (i think), but there are a fair few retail parks which i am trying.
