  • Although Vanquis is cleverly marketed as a credit card for those who've been declined elsewhere, only 18% of people who apply are accepted.

Although the online credit check and credit scoring system weeds out consumers who definitely wouldn't be offered a card, its the telephone interview that is the crucial part of the acceptance procedure.

The people who carry out the telephone interviews are 1st stage underwriters, and they are assessing the applicants overall attitude towards credit as well as checking that you are honest about your position and are truthful about your history (which they can plainly see on their screens in front of them).

Lol, only someone with relatively good credit could make the statement above. For the rest of us, being offered more credit means that we are becoming more trustworthy and making good progress back to normal credit. I can totally understand why green_machine is anxious to see an improvement, and I'm sure it's nothing to do with wanting to borrow more money on credit.

Spot on. I'm not looking for more money - just wondering why I haven't been offered any. I spend between £75 to £175 each month and always pay it off in full, so I suppose since they aren't making money off me there's no need to give me more - that makes sense.

And I don't have any other credit cards at the moment, currently awaiting hearing back from once though, so we shall see. If I get that one then the vanquis will be playing second fiddle.

When I got my card I don't recall there being a telephone interview - just saying you've been accepted, then trying to sell me there PPI.

Exactly, cardchoices is talking out of his b*m, the reason they phone you as you have said is to try and sell you their PPI and their cash advances.

And try to sell the PPI and offer a cash advance, of course!

I first applied online. The screen at the end popped up for a second and went. So I phoned them. Told them I had applied online and that the screen disapeared. So he found the online application, canceled it and went through the application on the phone. I was realy honest about my past and my old BR, the guy was realy friendly and asked loads of questions to which I answered 100% truthfully. Then he told me I had been accepted. It pays to be truthful. They can obviously see on screen everything when they run a credit check. Even the old debts which still show a balance even though they were included in BR. Whats annoying is those who complain about the APR, It doesn't affect anyone providing they only use the card for what they can afford to pay back when the statement arrives. Vanquis certainly are not for buying a plasma Tv on the minimum payment. Okay sure if your car packs in and you have a few hundred pounds repair bill, then use it. Even if you pay over a few months. Only run a balance if it's a emergancy. Not for a I want this or that.

So on their website it states they have helped over 1 million customers already improve their credit rating - So lets just say they have 1 million customers and as you claim they only accept 18% of applicants that means they have declined just short of 5 million people for a card?!
Although the online credit check and credit scoring system weeds out consumers who definitely wouldn't be offered a card, its the telephone interview that is the crucial part of the acceptance procedure.

The credit check/score weeds out who exactly?! They are well documented for accepting people that have been declared BR, Aswell as people with multiple defaults on file.

So all their Customer Service representatives are underwriters? My telephone 'interview' consisted of telling me about the direct debit payment procedure, Confirming my name, address and income, Setting up an account password, Telling me my APR and offering me PPI and a cash advance. No mention of my 'position' or 'history'.
