I currently owe around £2,500 across three cards. In total I am charged around £60 a month in interest.

I don't see how more than double that amount in charges for a balance £500 less can be considered "reasonable".
Didn't say it was 'reasonable' BUT I knew the interest rate, spent the money and paid it...No choice really?
Should in all honesty have used my Natwest and Asda cards as would have cost me a lot less but wanted to spend in one transaction and dodn't have enough on either.
Now I would obviously think twice :p

I applied for a vanquis card about 10days ago.

They have tried calling twice today - once on the landline at home once on my mobile. I missed the calls. I assume they will try calling back.

Is it a good sign they are calling me?

Yes this typically means you've been accepted but ensure to catch their call otherwise they may decline the application due to no contact :o

  • Hi,
Has anyone tried to use their vanquis card in America as I have been looking through lots of threads on this and people say you can't because it is a chip and pin card that can't be swiped, but i'd like to know if anybody has actually tried it, especially for the car hire swipe.
    Thanks.

We went to Florida last month and used my Vanquis card with no problems.

Used it for the car hire swipe, at Disney and at the shops - they just swipe it and you sign.

I have spoken to them today - my application has been accepted.

Initial credit limit of £250. I am assuming that is pretty standard.

    Interest rate of 34.9%

Of course i am not using it to borrow money, only to rebuild my credit limit. So it will be used and paid off each month.

They haven't quoted you the APR. Did they say "Interest rate of 34.07%"?

If so the APR is in fact 39.9%. They deliberately quote the simple interest rate to make them sounds cheaper than / as good as Capital One and Aqua whereas the reality is they are more expensive.

Thanks Nikki, I did see your posts about this but couldn't find anything as to how anyone had actually got on. We're off to florida in just under 2 weeks so it's handy to know that we've got it as a back up.:)

I still have a bankruptcy listed on my credit report. Despite this I applied for Vanquis and was accepted for the card with a 250 starting limit. Ive had the card for 3 months now and have paid off all balances in full. I currently spend very close to the limit but always pay it off. Im wondering for the purpose of building up a good credit history and getting my limits increased whether it is better to spend up to the limit or to spend only 50% of it as some people have stated? Also is it a better idea to leave a small balance or is it better to pay off the amount in full? Thanks.

Far more chance of getting a realistic limit in time though. Capital one = very low limit followed by one increase, Aqua= lowish limit then beg for an increase after 6 months.
Would appear that Vanquis customers, ignoring the stupidly high rates of interest are more likely to get a grown up limit as a reward for good account management. Swings and roundabouts
