Oh and you can get maternity pay for 39 weeks if you qualify for that - not sure about maternity allowance.

Basically you can have maternity leave for 52 weeks, but you can only claim SMP for 39 of those. The rest would be unpaid.

I think it comes from different pots and SMP is a set amount as far as I know - i THINK MA isn't (ie can be income dependant) but I honestly don't know :) As you have to claim it from jobcentre plus then I'd speak to them to be honest :) They should know :D

If you click on the link I posted it explains, but when I read it the only difference seems that you pay Tax & NI on SMP but not on MA.
Too many children, too little time!!!

Ok just reading up on it and you'd apparently get 90% of your salary so... 90% of £60= £54 a week instead of £117

  • thanks, on the directgov website it says

    "How much do you get?

Maternity Allowance pays a standard weekly rate of £117.18 or 90 per cent of your average gross weekly earnings (before tax), whichever is the smaller.
MA is paid for a maximum of 39 weeks."

so it looks like its the same as SMP, thats good as i dont have to worry about keeping the pregnancy a secret until i get regular extra hours!

I wish I'd asked for a pic at my 6wk scan but I didn't think about it I was just glad it was their and was a bit flustered as Chris had just done a dirty nappy and we were on the otherside of the hospital from the baby changing facilities  at least it meant OH dealt with it tho I always get left with the dirty ones!

    Woo hoo! :j
I knew you wouldnt be able to resist until 34 weeks :D
Make sure you list everthing you buy when you get back, I love seeing what people have got ;)

I was doing alright till I opened a parcel with OH last night! My Gran has sent me three little knitted cardigans. They are so little and scary :o Poor baby is going to have nothing to wear if I don't get my act together.

Also, just wanted to say thanks to everyone for yesterday. Was having a bit of a bad day, anxiety was pretty high. Feel much better today, and I'm grateful for you all being so nice to me :o
