Thought I'd post and say hi. Have been at work all day today, and was glad to get home. I'm getting my bag ready for tomorrow, as i have to go into hospital for a small personal operation, so hopfully should be home by teatime. Not looking forward to a general anasetic though.
Math - Congratulations on your good news re job interview for your wife.

SnowyOwl wrote:Frugglewump, I love your new house. That fireplace in the bedroom looks especially interesting - I bet if you take some paint remover and a toothbrush to it you'll reveal an absolutely gorgeous cast iron original gem.
I probably will clear it up - but i want to look into moving it downstairs first. The idea of a fire in the living room is fine, but a draft down the chimney into the bedroom doesn't appeal.
It's a shame in some ways that the house is in a smokeless zone, I love a wood fire. You've defintely got lots of scope in the garden for a veg patch, hens, two or even three washing lines, and still have space for some doggies. Oh I wish I had a big garden....
It's not as big as the picture makes it look, it's possibly 12ft by 12ft (definately 12ft wide, not sure on length) - I can get to the shed in 3 steps. We want the dogs to be border collie stock (depends on what the resuce center has), I can just see them chasing hens round the garden when boredStill wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!0 -
Golly gosh, I've just got back from dinner with my dad which came complete with revelation of huge family secret  My dad just found out a few days ago that one of his cousins is actually his elder half-brother  born when my grandmother was in her teens before she met my grandfather  I'm not close to my dad's family anyway but I must have cousins I didn't know I had - I thought I didn't have any first cousins on my dad's side...
Thanks for all the congrats on savings - I have been very lucky to have low accommodation costs for the last 3 years but I only started saving for the long term at the beginning of 2004. Before that I was paying off my student loan (£5k) and then I spent much of 2003 saving for my laptop and my digital piano. I'm so chuffed with how much extra I've managed to put away since MSE though - especially because I recently worked out a budget that would enable me to pay more rent and still save a decent amount (which, as I've promised my housemate I'm moving out next winter/spring, is what I'll be doing this time next year if I don't move in with my BF).
And thanks loads to MATH for the paid2clicks, I'll start on them a.s.a.p.
Got some super chicken & salmon bargains at Sainsburys on the way home, lots of stuff reduced to £1.50 a pack so I got 16 chicken breasts and 8 salmon steaks for £9!Operation Get in Shape

Bargin Rzl so jealous of your sainsbury buys never anything that I need on offer when I go and as I eat lots of chicken and salmon, that would have be brill for filling my new freezer.
Frugglewump your new house really nice, just moved into ours a month ago and already feels like home, though done nothing to it yet as in last semester of uni and have told OH and my dad that there is to be no knocking down of walls till I have done my last exam ( God help me, Know I'll come in from lat exam to find half interior walls knocked down). OH consoling himself by looking for a new fish tank, he had to sell his when we moved as it was too big for the house.
Oh well I think I'm off to bed know goodnight allGC: £400/ £00 -
right - apologies in advance but this will be a rant... went out for a meal for someone's birthday... felt obliged to go, spent 10 mins trying to park, ended up late, but half the people only arrived 15 mins after me. food was average, not amazing, just ok, then it took 40 minutes to get the bill after asking!! it seemed really high and after going through it we found 2 bottles of wine on it that we hadn't ordered. we got them taken off, but there were a few other items i wanted to query too. they also kept the 10% service charge (for what service? ripping us off!) from the original higher total.... so i went out and chose cheap food, had soft drinks and ended up paying £6 more than i should have. and with all the delay i missed the first half of desperate housewives.........
(and breathe!)
going to go to bed now - haven't even looked at veg bag to plan the next week, too busy sulking...
(sorry - feel much better for ranting about it though!):happyhear0 -
Hi Everyone
This is my first post so excuse me if I some how make a mess of it.
I've been reading your posts for a couple of weeks and wanted to say thanks to you all for making it OK to be frugal!
I have been trying to spend wisely for the last three years. Sometimes I don't do as well as I'd like (particularly when working long hours which I've decided is false economy) but I have managed to avoid a lot of debt for consumer items. I recently, after resisting as long as possible, replaced my car and need to get ahead with repayments. I am a sole parent of two teenagers so worry about unemployemnt or illness affecting my ability to pay car loan and mortgage and therefore risking our home.
Currently I'm working on DIY projects (on the cheap). I have just finished my daughter's bedroom. I good tip is to use carpet reminants. As her room is small we got one at a bargain price. Now starting on my son's room. For his room I got a great bargain on a doona cover on EBay.
Sorry to hear you are all freezing. It is Summer here, yesterday was 39 degrees, so very hot, though so far we have had a mild Summer with a bit of welcome rain (usually doesn't rain for about 3 months). Today looks pleasant, a nice day for painting.
Thanks again for your helpful tips.
Thank you to MSE contributers who are a great help to keep me motivated to take care with my spending.0 -
Hello everyone, good morning to you all.
Can't sleep AGAIN! Bahhh, I have given up lying there and am doing something useful, ie starting today's thread:j. At least it's Thursday, nearly the weekend, and then I can knock myself out with some antihistamines or vino and get a long sleep. I wouldn't dare during the week due to hangover and oversleeping potential.
I was informed yesterday that I will be in the office alone this afternoon. Fantastic planning yet again on behalf of management...some people on holiday, some who work part-time going off home....so that is obviously the best time to have everybody else except one go on a course. What twits! Now if I could just work out how to turn all the phones off I could get a good long catnap in.
Powie69 - I saw your late post from yesterday, best of luck with your op for today. Be good to yourself when you get home.
Bargain Rzl - gosh, that is quite an awesome family revelation. I guess it'll make some things make a bit more sense now. I gained an extra member of the family quite recently. Unknown to everyone else a lady in the family had a baby a looooong time ago and the child was adopted - this baby has turned up now, and he contacted me by email through my workplace using my (unusual) surname. He's a 3rd cousin of mine so not that ground shaking for me...but lots of pennies dropped for members of my parents' generation. It's interesting how times have changed, nobody would so much as bat an eyelid these days if a child is born out of wedlock. Despite all those secrets from long ago people know something is not quite adding up, and often ultimately the truth gets out anyway. I think the old ways of keeping secrets caused too much heartache and misery and just made things worse for those in the centre of it.
Old Style today...have just had my breakfast. I suspect I'll end up having another breakfast as it is rather early still. Maybe a wee helping of porridge or something before I go to work to tide me over and keep my fat fingers off the sweetie machine.
Lunch...will be spent queuing in the bank
Dinner...will be having more home made tomato sauce - will have it with pasta and chickpeas I think
Snacks...yoghurts, fruit. I always tell myself I will be good, then four days out of five I give in and have either a choccie bar or a packet of crisps before the office day is over.
Steps...this has kind of died a death now, I still don't have a decent pedometer, but I think it's only been about 2,000 per day this week. So that's only about 200,000 steps I need to take over the weekend to give a half way decent average for the past fortnight. I should walk to New York (except I'd get wet of course).
Cheerio everyone, have a wonderful Thursday.
All the best
