Susy G, Use tonight to calmly lay out on paper your case for a pay increase.
Companies can get away with paying differing salaries for lots of differing reasons. I wouldn't concentrate what others are on but build a case for what you are worth. You need to lay out a clear business like case with hard evidence.
List egamples where your hours, sales, performance, length of employment are equal or surpass your collegues.
Thinks of areas where you have multi skilled and have been adaptable across and number of roles or have unique skills or experience that other staff do not have.
Also think of targets you may have been given at performance reviews that you have met and think of other areas where you have developed and brought added value to the business.
If you can also list some of your initiatives that have bought new business, saved cost or steamlined systmes that would be fab also.
Once you have all this in your mind ask for a meeting with your boss to discuss you salary. I wouldn't mention anyone elses salaries, lay out your case and tell him what you are prepared to accept as fair renumeration.
Good luck and remember stay calm, focused, and in charge.

math thank for the advice but this is not about a pay rise this is about fairness. we work in a shop and we get a hourly rate plus commision its the hourly rate im upset about i been employed with them for six years this chap i work with has been employed with them 15months, and has been getting a higher rate since he started, we do the same hours and work, if one sells more then the other its reflected in the commission, so they must of employed this bloke and told him to stay quite about his pay so i dont ask for the same, now that what i call belittling me0

Hello again everyone
I'm back home now from work, and in my lounging attire, ie cut off track suit bottoms and a very ancient jumper. I look a right mess but I don't care as I am comfy. It's mid-term over here in N.Ireland, and therefore there is no college on tonight...YIPPEE!! I think I will go to the cinema later to see Brokeback Mountain. My social life is such that I have to go alone - I hate the funny looks other people give out to people on their own, especially from teenagers and early 20's people, I find they are the worst though I do try hard to ignore them. I once went to a Rod Stewart (Do Ya Think I'm Seeeeexy, come on suga let me knoowowowowoww!!!) concert alone and the girl sitting beside me turned around and stared at me the entire time, it was really uncomfortable. At least it will be dark in the cinema, and hopefully virtually empty it being a Monday.
JennyW Happy Birthday to you! I do hope you can celebrate and that you at least hear from your other half even though you can't be together today. I'm glad to hear he's in the navy...when I read your original post about him serving for Her Majesty I wondered what you meant....:o
LilmissKitKat...welcome back and it's wonderful that you are feeling better. I hope you can keep us up to date with your days on a regular basis.
SuzyG...sue the Bar Stewards!! They haven't a leg to stand on - how can they possibly defend paying a brand new person more than an established member of staff. They will fall down on the Equal Pay Act, so draw their attention to it. As MATH (the wise one, OMG MATH get the T-Shirt to match your coasters and posters!) says keep it factual rather than emotional - also it's not really your role to argue the case for another employee as you don't know for sure what that person has agreed in private with her manager. It's also not a performance issue - unless they have an issue with your performance, and have told you that your rate has been adjusted because of it. Well, maybe not sue the barstewards right away but make them nervous and they will cough up so you won't have to!!!

SnowyOwl - my sympathies about your noisy office. Particularly the hoover. In my office it comes round at about 7pm, and let's face it, when I'm in at 7pm it's not exactly for fun, I'm not getting paid extra for it, and the last thing I need is to have my concentration disturbed. However the photocopier's the main bane of my life at the moment - people have been TOLD it's out of order but they will persist in trying to use it, so I have to sit here trying to work above the sound of machinery chewing up paper. The repair man's here at the mo...
Ahh the dreaded hoover Bargain Rzl...in the last place I worked they never bothered to vacuum the floor unless it was visibly dirty (even if the carpet was crunchy!). We used to "accidentally" empty our hole punches here and there once or twice a week. What a dump! And the photocopier drives me insane...it's simple to use but it is amazing how many people can't work it out...and need help day in and day out...and I am the one sitting closest...grrrr.... On the happy occasions it breaks down I cellotape a very large "out of order, engineer has been called" notice on it, it's wonderful as I don't get disturbed!
Did I tell you that the heating was off at work today? We were all sat there with our coats on. I'll be wearing big boots and thick socks tomorrow, I don't care how stupid it looks with my uniform. The skinny ones really suffer (not that I think it's a blessing wearing the extra insulation I have acquired over this past year or two!) - some have to wear gloves and have been known to bring in blankets to wrap around their legs. Yes, the heating is unreliable...we have a very large and open office, while the managers have their individual offices with little fan heaters so they are alright so it's not a priority. Ah well, I am looking into leaving there. I really, really want to move back to England - this will with luck be some time over the next 12-18 months or so, fingers Xed.
That's all for now folks, hope you're having a great Monday evening.

That is complete BS, and was probably the first thing that popped into his head. Does everyone who lives far away get more money, and why is it included in his hourly rate and not as a fixed amount eg the cost of petrol or travelcard.
You mention you work in a shop. Does it have a union associated with it? This website might help you...

Evening everyone!! (((Hugs))) to all that need them !!
First chance I've had to post today! DS1 had a teacher training day so doesn't go back to school until tomorrow.
My day started off badly - DS2 turned 3 last week and has gone from a placid, calm, non-tantrumming little boy to AN ABSOLUTE MONSTER!! Where did this child come from???Can I have my son back please??????? We had a tantrum about DS1 putting the final piece in a puzzle, about leaving the house, getting in the car seat, driving to nursery (at which point it got so bad I had to pull over, DS1 was crying aswell and I REALLY didn't want to crash the car today!!) I then had to carry him into nursery (still screaming!!) and leave him there - they said he took a while to stop after I left!
When I picked him up and we went to his nan's -he was throwing toys (for no reason!) and then had a tantrum because he wanted chocolate rather than his dinner!!
DS1 on the other hand (who's always been hard to handle!) has been great!! He's 6 in August and is (on the whole) a pleasure at the moment!! I took him and his friend to local play centre today, then to McDonalds for lunch and he was really well behaved! My how things can change......
Needless to say it was early to bed for them both tonight (I'd really had enough!)
Have done 1 load of washing which has now dried (on the rads.) Have a pile of ironing which I'm going to tackle shortly!! DW is full & ready to go on! Need to get DS1's school bags/lunch organised and clean his shoes!!
Hope you all have a great evening - sometimes I wish I drank, as tonight's the sort of night when a glass of wine would be in order!!!!:beer:20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

I can understand why you feel poorly treated and yes you are probably right when you say he may have been told to be quiet about his salary. But this is standard practice it is a myth that all people doing the same job in the same company get paid the same salary - they don't. They all get paid what they agreed to when they accepted the job and this will vary considerabley depending on the job market, that years budgets/priorities and how badly the company wants the post filling and sadly how much you push for. Unless you can prove systematic discrimination (and most companies have a million and one ways of wriggling out of that one) you are far better fighting your own corner and getting the very best deal for you. I guess that is what the other guy did when he negotiated a much better rate than the one you have. I know it sounds sh!tty but that's the way it works.
I wish you all the best and hope you get a greta outcome - you deserve it.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0
