Aldi and Lidl woo middle-class shoppers as Waitrose loses out

Aldi claims that half its customers are now middle class – the ABC1 social category – while Lidl says its car parks are now full of Mercedes, BMWs and Audis, as professionals flock to enjoy bargain basement prices.

ROFL - bet they swap the Aldi carrier for Sainsbury's ones before they arrive home though! Oh and btw, don't be misled by the cars people drive.....the "benefits family" next door to me drive a BMW, albeit an old one.....best thing is they "borrowed" the money from the social to buy it because they are....wait for it...."disabled" (they are as bloody disabled as me).
:j Got the loan and now down from £9k to £4.5k. Trying to get a better mortgage deal now but thanks to ex-husband I am being knocked back..... Still in a better place than two years ago. Have faith!:j

I shop at Lidl occasionally and would still do so if I were a multi-millionaire. Securing the best value for your money is always MSE :money: .

I went into Aldi today ... as I said I would, knowing this strange way of doing things. There weren't many people about, I completely forgot about the signs/method entirely... and the only reason I remembered to look for this sign was because there were 2 people ahead of me at the till and it was very quiet and I remembered ... so I looked, couldn't see it at all.... eventually looked UP and there it was. A sign. Saying what the method was.

I must admit I panicked. I had a small box I had been collecting my groceries in and it said you were supposed to put the groceries into your trolley after paying ... well, I grab my stuff as it comes through. I stack it on the converyor belt in the order in which I intend to pack the items (OCD thing). And I had intended putting half in my bag, half in the box... and at the point of putting my debit card in the machine half my stuff would be in my bag. The rules indicate you pack your stuff AFTER paying.

It really stressed me out and made me anxious, knowing there was this other way - and having read the rules - and not being able to follow the rules.

Not good .. not good at all.

And the packing shelf .... in order to try to follow the rules I ended up putting everything in the box, I knew (from here/MSE) that there was a packing shelf ... so ended up struggling in a bit of a panic, with the badly packed box (I'd put the stuff on the conveyor in box/bag order) over to the packing shelf. Now, I'd have just thought that was some part of the structure. I wouldn't have known it was formally a packing area and I would have felt guilty using it under normal circumstances.

So, now I know there's different rules in Aldi ... but even though there IS a sign you have to know and look for it and STILL get it right!

You do not make money by throwing it away.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Totally agree with you.
Fortuantly i don't need to go to Aldi or Lidl because i'm not on benefits, however if I was i'd hate the day i'd have to step into those shops. They are awful!

I can afford to shop wherever I like, but I choose to shop at Aldi. I have never claimed a benefit in my life (and even if I had what is the relevance)

I take it you have never shopped there, try it, you might like it.

I advise ervyone shopping at Aldi and Liddle to ignore this silly rule and do what you do in every other supernarket which is to pack your shopping as it reches the end of the conveyor belt.

Yes we are unfamiliar with Aldi, our first time there and they don't seem to operate like every other checkout in the world. A polite request and explanation to pack the goods elsewhere would suffice, instead of bad attitude thrown towards my wife and I.

Applicable description to this particular checkout operator; only. As stated in my post, other checkout staff have been very helpful and pleasant elsewhere and there are plenty of people more deserving of a customer service front line job than that particular person. Reiterate, not all checkout staff are robots, just this one!

If this is in the wrong forum please move, thanks.
Do you live in the UK perminantly or do you live in Bangkok. Service in Thailand in a supermarket is totally different. You have you shpping bagged up quite often by 2 or 3 assistants if you have alot of goods and some even take it out to the car for you. If you have shopped in the supermarkets in Bangkok then you have certainly been spoilt :)
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)
    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

Aldi claims that half its customers are now middle class – the ABC1 social category – while Lidl says its car parks are now full of Mercedes, BMWs and Audis, as professionals flock to enjoy bargain basement prices.

Our local Aldi often has recent reg BMW's, and at least one of the regulars drives a modern Jag, not to mention the likes of the Landrovers etc.
For a while several of the local takeaways were also buying from there...until I think they got banned.

I shop at Tesco, Morrisons, and Aldi's (all 3 are local, and Tesco/Aldi are opposite each other), as I've found that they all have their strong points - we go through a lot of fizzy drink in a week and have found that Aldi's coke for example is the only "cheaper" one we all like*, and the cheap veg is often better than the equivalent "own brand" at Tesco's and Morrisons.

So i'll usually go from Tesco, straight over the Aldi, and despite Aldi's only usually having 1 or 2 tills open (sometimes if it's not busy they operator tidies up/sorts shelves near the till between customers), they are almost always faster to get through than Tesco.

I learned after about our second shop there that the trick is to load the heavy stuff onto the conveyor first, then it goes back into the trolly first, and I don't "pack" it until i'm at the car (where I've got several plastic boxes**), which makes it much faster and easier than trying to pack at the cramped checkout with a queue of people waiting to be dealt with.

I really wish Tesco's, and Morrisons would do something similar, it's much easier to be able to load straight from the trolly into reusable boxes, than having to put everything into bags.

*We don't even all like Pepsi, Coca Cola etc.

**Remember the green ones Safeways used to sell, those ones)

If you want to pack your shopping at a leisurely pace while the rest of the world waits then go to Tesco or M&S and pay the over inflated prices for doing so.

    Otherwise when in Rome............................

M&S are the worst store for having understaffed checkouts and hurling the food through. Now they don't give out bags it's become much worse.
