Aldi you can keep your 49p 5kg Potatoes.

First time shopping at Aldi Northampton.

Thought it was ok, few bargains like the 5kg of spuds at 49p.

However

My wife who speaks English as a secondary language was in distress at the checkout, I was taking care of my 2 year old boy when I noticed the checkout robot with the big mouth was literally throwing the groceries into the trolley. My wife was frantically trying to pack them into the bags.

First time I have lost my temper as I shouted at her to stop, she shouted back, saying the bags had to be packed away from the checkout. Proceeding to 'chuck' more groceries into the trolley, so I pushed them back further.

She shouted across the store for the Manager who relieved her and I had a go at him, was tempted to throw all the groceries back at him, as they were just about packed I threw the money at him saying we will not be back. Distressing scene witnessed by all.

Never in my life have I seen such contempt for a customer or lack of respect for goods in a shop. My wife was very upset. There was only 2 checkouts open. Not enough staff Aldi, employ more! All this could have being avoided with a pleasant fake smile and simple clear instruction from the checkout robot as experienced by the very nice checkout staff elsewhere who will also help you pack if your with children. Will never go back!

Don't expect much sympathy or respect if you go about describing supermarket checkout operators as robots.

You are unfamiliar with Aldi and how it works, and I'm sorry if the operator behaved badly towards your wife, and you should complain to the company and certainly never return, but describing staff as non-human is not acceptable.
  • Please think about the staff - they are expected to get through the customers as quick as possible or customeres at the other end of the queue get annoyed.

It is normal in Aldi and in Lidl to put the shopping in the trolly and then put it into bags at a later time.

Our local Aldi has very clear notices that you are expected to put goods in your trolley and then pack your bags in the packing area.

The first time I went I hated it, put my trolley the wrong way by the checkout (there is a clearly marked diagram on the floor) and tried to pay by credit card - the checkout assistant was extremely pleasant.

Now I'm more used to their system I enjoy shopping there although habit still takes me to Tesco more often.

it is the way it works it Aldis, you have to remember it does not operate in the same way as tescos etc... while you were patiently packing your bags, there would have been others in the que tapping their foot wondering why you weren't getting out the way.The staff at our aldi are incredibly friendly and know that I am not as active as I should be and they always assist me- but I know the products get put back in th etrolley for packing away from the tills. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience but I don't think that it was relevan to say about english being your wifes second language- in our aldis only one member of staff has english as their first language and thats the manager.

Yep you're at fault. I personally have no time for people like you. You make working in retail a massive chore when in fact a) its your fault b) you like the sound of your own voice when noone else does. I'm sure Aldi wont be crying losing one such customer as yourself.

Yes we are unfamiliar with Aldi, our first time there and they don't seem to operate like every other checkout in the world. A polite request and explanation to pack the goods elsewhere would suffice, instead of bad attitude thrown towards my wife and I.

Applicable description to this particular checkout operator; only. As stated in my post, other checkout staff have been very helpful and pleasant elsewhere and there are plenty of people more deserving of a customer service front line job than that particular person. Reiterate, not all checkout staff are robots, just this one!

If this is in the wrong forum please move, thanks.

I am afriad this is what happens when shops employ immigrants with little grasp of the language. :(
