Just to echo other users' experiences, Aldi operate a different model to the big supermarkets, its quicker for everyone (customers & their staff) if the items are put straight into the trolley which I presume helps Aldi offer the kind of prices they do. There's a co-op store next to our local Aldi, 49p for 5Kg White Potatoes from Aldi or £1.39 from Co-op (noticed when I bought my newspaper there). There are enormous (A0?) posters behind the tills explaining the system in our local store.
They also operate with a minimum of staff which keeps them busy, I understand they are well paid though (£8+ an hour?).From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings

I think the OP was referring to his wife as being the person who spoke English as a second language, not the checkout operator.
"My wife who speaks English as a secondary language was in distress at the checkout, I was taking care of my 2 year old boy when I noticed the checkout robot with the big mouth was literally throwing the groceries into the trolley. My wife was frantically trying to pack them into the bags."
Aldi has a packing area away from the tills, presumably to speed up the checkout process. This is one of the ways they keep their prices low, in other stores the cost of help with packing etc is added onto the price of goods. From your description of events it sounds as if your reaction to the misunderstanding inflamed the situation.
As you said yourself, all this could have been avoided with a smile and simple clear instructions, you could have done this for your wife instead of yelling at the staff.0 -
I didn't know about Aldi having a differenet system, but I've rarely lived near one and shopped in one infrequently - usually when they're virtually empty and I only have 3-4 items anyway.
Trying to think back to an Aldi, I can't think of being aware of a packing area. I must say it's not that clear if you're not "in the know". I'll have to look out next time (planning on going tomorrow as there's something on special this week I'd like to get), see about this poster/system and packing area. Just in case I do ever buy a lot from there.0 -

In mine the posters explaining this are directly ahead of the tills so are easily seen while queueing.
Don't forget to take your own bags and a pound for the trolley, in mine there are no baskets and you pay for the bags.
Good luck
