  • Sounds a bit excessive, you dont say how long you run it for each day.
When it was delivered did you have a look in the tank to see it was all there?

Have you been running it for longer in this cold weather, or have you cranked up the heat setting? Either would obviously impact on consumption rate.
  • Same thing happened myself. 500 lts went in a few weeks last winter. You need to check the setting on the actual oil burner/boiler thats outside. Mine was set to max 95 or something liek that. I turned it down to 75 and the radiators still produce the same heat but the oil isnt being 'burnt' off as quickly.

#522 /#523- we have had it on more since it has been so cold but only by 2 hours more a day. We are out most of day so it's in the evening that instead of on at 6pm knocking off at 9pm, we have it on 5pm, off at 10pm. Where b4 200l lasted about 5 weeks, now 400l only lasted the same amount of time! It doesn't make sense!
Have to admit, no, I never go and check, firstly there is no measuring thing on side of tank and am I naive, to trust that the oil company wouldn't cheat u... would they? We use Redon fuels - they r the cheapest but is that a sign of low quality oil? Couldn't even get through to them today, so thank goodness we have an electric heater!
    Thankyou, #524, will check that!

Thank you for the comments! Keep warm everyone!

Keep a clean length of bamboo to use as a dipstick. Dip the tank before delivery and mark the level. Do a comparison dip after delivery. Won't show small discrepancies but useful if someone is working a larger scam.

Also, after all the cold weather, make sure your tank isn't split somewhere. Is there a strong smell of oil in the vicinity of the tank? There shouldn't be.

I had a delivery of oil yesterday and the tanker driver was telling me about bits of his tanker which weren't working properly due to the extreme cold. I suppose the metering system on the delivery hose could be similarly affected.

The harsh lesson is to pay much closer attention to deliveries and consumption in the future.

So, is it economical to leave the heating constantly ON at a lower temperature?

What price and worse the hassle of a burst pipe......even if you are insured.....in real, personal terms a nightmare and not worth it to save a few hundred quid!

  • OMG - Bangor Fuels my usual supplier -is £576 for 900 litres - that must be a joke, not that the rest are cheap - Assembly or someone in power needs to look at how they are charging and regulate this - there is profiteering going on
