Home Heating Oil

Pitchepilla. Local boiler manufacturer told me many years ago that for "average" semi usage is 2.4 litres to heat system up and 1.2 litres per hour thereafter to keep it running.
Insulation of pipework especially underfloor is important -many houses have none or it is ineffectual. Afterthat it is roofspace , walls and windows not forgetting the hot water cylinder which should also be effectively insulated. Really worth doing if you own property. Almost forgot make sure boiler is insulated especially if outside in a shed, garage or brick enclosure otherwise you will be trying to heat the planet. After all everyone has their cylinder insulated so why leave the boiler out - it runs at a very high temperature. criminal not to do so.0 -
Thanks Sheerdelight for the info! I don't own the property but will try to ask landlord to do something as the cost is crippling me! From your figures above, looks like system is over-using a bit? - might ask landlord to have it all checked also. As far as i know there is no insulation anywhere! Our boiler is outside in the garage and never thought that it would need to be insulated!! Seems a bit obvious now that you have said it!
Thanks again!0 -

pitchepilla- the figures are only an approximation. However if your house is insulated then you will be using more oil than you should. Much depends on how benevolent your landlord is. To insulate a house well will cost many hundreds which will not benefit landlord, Might increase your rent to cover cost if willing to insulate the house!0

Even putting more insulation in the roof sapce will help a lot - and wont break the bank. B&Q often have great special offers on loft insulation and with a mask and good gloves wont be too hard to put in yourself
Lagging the tank - add an old duvet
Insulate the rest of the house cheap buy lining curtains, using draft excluders etc0 -
