We use a bamboo cane!! Just dip in until you feel it touch the oil and then put it against the outside of the tank to see how far up the oil reaches!! Very technical I know but works for me! Doesnt tell you exact quantities but does as an estimate as to how much ie half full, third full, EMPTY!!!

You can buy an oil monitor for about 50 quid in B&Q but we use the old method of one of us peering through the cap whilst the other runs their finger down the side till the one peering through the cap can see it hit the top of the oil level. Another not very technical method but works to let you know how full the tank is
  • Just ordered 1000 litres £331.80 - (31.60 ex vat) from boilerjuice.com. £30 cheaper than EMOs quote of £362. Certainly worth shopping around.
  • I'm getting quotes at the minute for oil, this is the first time I've ever done it so I'm a bit clueless...!

Any advice on best/cheapest? I've a couple of quotes so far:
    Maxol - 300L £126
    Hayes - 250L £105/350L £140.

Looking for in and around the 300L mark - I've noticed some places i.e. Cawoods won't deliver less than 500L.

It's for Stranmillis in Belfast. Those prices seem pretty reasonable but just wanted some other opinions :)

    thanks

I tried that one, doesn't really give the info I need, seems to only deal with 500L/900L. Thanks though. I think I'll probably go with Hayes.
  • I am not sure if they cover Stranmillis but i placed an order with Bangor Fuels on Tues and they delivered yesterday (I am in the east of the city)

They do small deliveries- www.bangorfuels.com and it covers a radius of 20 miles I think- but I thought they were good value and the staff were pleasant:)

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • Arkonite Babe,

I'm a bit confused by your post as to whether or not this thread has actually been moved and where it has been moved to. Maybe you can clarify this?

    Ladybolan,

Most oil companies will not be happy to deliver small amounts of oil as the cost of transporting the oil to you swallows up the profit they make on selling the oil. It works out more economical to order larger amounts of oil as the oil companies can make you a better deal. That's why they usually quote for 500 or 900 litres.

It there a reason why you are ordering only 300l? Do you have a small tank or are you ordering small to help with budgeting? We had a topup service with Fuel Services and found it a very expensive way to buy oil. The more oil you buy at a time, the better value you are likely to see so putting away some money each month towards filling the tank from nearly empty may make more sense financially than buying a little oil more frequently.

Redon Fuels in Newtownabbey (Doagh Rd) do small drops, 200 & 300, we have got these in the past when £ were tight. Give them a call and see if they will go to stranmillis.
