Out of interest I've just checked the LHA rates for a 2 bedroomed property in the area we moved from in 2001 (Preston postcode, but Fylde Area) and where we moved to (Wigan). I was actually surprised to see that it's lower where we are now (£98.08) than where we came from (£120), and we only moved a shade over 34 miles !!!Oldernotwiser wrote: »You must live in a very inexpensive area if you can rent 2 bed accommodation for less than £100 per week; if you look through the table of LHA amounts you'll see that there are very few areas wheere the rental allowance is less than this.
Even more surprising was there's a "patch" about 9 miles from where we are now, but heading back to where we were (comes under Bolton & Bury), where it's only £92.31 - and this was the other area we considered moving to.
My DD is in a 2 bedroomed Council House under Wigan (so she'd be allowed £98.08 a week), but the rent is only £56ish (?) as best I recall her saying. I think it's generally accepted that the rent on a council property is by far the cheapest in any areamy 2 bedroom flat is council owned and its £51 a week rent

You are doing it again the way you come across is that you do not believe what i am saying or even lying its no wonder i get angry with you people, my rent is approx 61 pounds per week i think its sad that you people on here go and check the relevant sites just to see where rent is cheaper etc so you can come and post another snotty comment !!It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.0 -
I think single mums get a bad name, that a majority of the time is unfair. I am quite fortunate in that I had a career before I had my children, had to go back to work early on both occasions as I was the main earner. I continued to work full time after I became a lone parent, however due to childcare costs I can only work because of CTC my costs are £115 a week, I was getting around £70 a week CTC to help with this. Things are very very tight now but I am in a better position than I was 2 years ago.
On the other hand my sister chose to have a family at a young age, her husband worked full time they claimed nothing she was a housewife, a personal tragedy saw them lose their only child, and the child she was expecting, she turned to me, her husband turned to drugs, they went on to have 2 more children together (he left her when she was pregnant with the youngest). She turned to benefits, but once both were in school, she went to night school and has qualifications in typing and computers, however my nieces are now 11 and 10 and she has yet to get a job, not through want of trying! She even did 3 months at the local college for free to get experience but is turned down for everything she goes for be it shop work or secretarial as she has no work history.
Mums be they single or with a partner get discriminated against in the workplace, its not supposed to happen but it does. When I applied to do the course for my current career my baby was 9 months old, one of the questions I was asked was "What would happen if you were due to start work at 7.30 and your baby was unwell", fortunately my childminder is like Mother Teresa and even had both kids with chicken pox, when they would not allow me leave from work. However for most women they would need time off and that is taken into account.
Single mums get a raw deal, especially in the current economic climate when jobs are thin on the ground, employers want reliable employees, they ask for qualifications now, that 20 years ago were not necessary, they can pick and choose who they want.
Yes you get some people who opt to live on benefits, but personally i think if there were more opportunities for single mums to work, the majority would take it.0 -
with respect jennie, and damzel, it is you who are coming across as rude.
compare your posts with the above from davenkirst.... youre coming across really badly, and i wonder whether you are enforcing any bad feelings against lp's/ benefit claimants? i suspect you are, and unfortunately i bet there are some lp's reading this cringing at your attitudes representing them.
who who do think you are suspecting i am enforcing bad feelings among other lp i dont do that i simply stick up for myself and wont be looked down upon by rude people who think they are above other people when frankly they are not !!!It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.0 -
I dont think ONT was trying to be rude, LHA is basically HB rates for private renting, so i presume you are in a Local authority housing so LHA wouldnt even apply to you anyway. You are doing it again the way you come across is that you do not believe what i am saying or even lying its no wonder i get angry with you people, my rent is approx 61 pounds per week i think its sad that you people on here go and check the relevant sites just to see where rent is cheaper etc so you can come and post another snotty comment !!
So i think it's a case of crossed wires.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -

It was not intended as a "snotty" comment and it's quite usual to back up statements by checking your facts first. Most people who post reliable information do this.
Of course, if you're lucky enough to be in council or LHA accommodation then your rent will be lower but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't get more paid if you were in privately rented.0 -
because i know that the people using this site who do think bad of claimants will be reading posts such as some of those on this thread and using those attitude to back up the views/ stereotypes they already hold. not saying thats right of course, but thats how it works, on other parts of this site it becomes blatantly obvious.who who do think you are suspecting i am enforcing bad feelings among other lp i dont do that i simply stick up for myself and wont be looked down upon by rude people who think they are above other people when frankly they are not !!!
i mentioned other lp's because there have been debates where i have felt like ive been banging my head against a brick wall trying to put foward points i believe are central to the issues of welfare provisions etc, to those who perhaps hold unfavourable views on claiming lp's. unfortunately when there are comments made such as 'get barely enough to live on', 'it isnt much is it?', 'its fcuking hard- why dont you try it', then 'youre all just sad and jealous'...... it kind of undermines what i try and believe in/ say to others!
because of this, i will admit i did cringe when reading some posts on this thread. :cool:We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl Jung
