You should be able (in theory) to get maximum broadband sppeds available.
Check here: http://www.bt.com/broadband/ for your speed (enter telephone number in the box on the right).
  • I am currently using dial-up and looking to move to broadband. However, due to the distance between my house and the telephone exchange, I am only able to get 512KB. I can't seem to find any provider which offers a lower cost for 512KB than it does for its standard package - including Madasafish and Tiscali - ie, minimum of £15/mth. (By the way, I tried ordering the 'cheaper' offer on Madasafish the other day but the promotion code didn't work and I was directed to their standard package.) Does anyone know if there are such offers or will I have to make do with £15/mth? Thanks.

Thanks, as your post prompted me to ring Pipex, although I just said I wanted to know what lower cost package they could offer me. I too am going to be saving £8.50 per month

Not sure if i've done the right thing as they've now emailed me my MAC code and as yet haven't confimed that I didn't want it and only wanted to be moved to a cheaper price plan. Gave up trying to speak to someone after a 20 minute wait on an 0845 number :o

If you don't use your MAC code, it just lapses and you stay with the same ISP, but out of contract so only the notice period specified in the contract applies i.e. 30 days with no penalty. If you negotiate a better deal, you are tying yourself into a further 12 month contract.
If you want to phone Pipex, use a geographic number from here: http://www.saynoto0870.com/companysearch.php
and 18866 or one of the like, then at least it doesn't matter how long you are on.
  • Can anyone offer advice about moving house/broadband? When I moved 8 months ago I remained with Freeserve (Wanadoo) because my contract was under 1 year, and they have a cancellation penalty. They took 3 weeks to reconnect me after I'd moved, plus a fee for moving, plus the extra I had to pay for non-Broadband dial-up for the 3 weeks I was waiting. And I got conflicting advice from BT and Freeserve: BT said they could switch immediately (using a MAC) and Freeserve said that they 'don't use that system'. I'm going to be moving again soon and don't want a repetition of last time. What experience do others have?

If I recall correctly, Wanadoo/Fresserve don't do migrations, you have get ADSL taken off your line then order again.
If you want to use a free dial-up in the meantime, you could use AOL if you are prepared to accept all their crap on your pc. Just canel within the free period, there is no minimum contract.
  • Hubby phoned boltblue to see if they could do a deal to stay with them They offered 23.99 month for 2 meg with 17gb limit. We only used 3-4gb month so he wants to go to madasafish. We would be grateful for any comments from people who have used them. Have they been ok. He was thinking about wannadoo last week but now he's seen maaf he thinks they sound ok. I'm worried about reliability as he will be in business soon and the bb connection will be crucial.

Got really confused on adsl guide as well.

    This information is not correct.

I called to get a mac code and they do give you one, but try to persuade you to stay by offering you a better deal.

It might be that you can't migrate to them then.
