also, try emusic.com/ilab for (apparently) 35 free songs tunes.gif and 1 audiobook. i haven't tried it yet, but there was a leaflet for it in with my new little ipod speaker thing.

just to update, have now tried it. was slightly...underwhelmed! i did manage to get a bill bryson audiobook, but struggled to find much music that i would listen to. there's loads there - but all independent labels. so for a chart tart like me, not a lot on offer! still, got adele's album then cancelled so can't really complain...

Thanks for the warm welcome....you will here a lot from me as I have a real bee in my bonnet this year for getting back on track as we are in the application process to immigrate to Canada and need 'unencumbered funds' to be eligible......

I have twice typed a long reply to your London trip with lots of suggestion and each time I've wrecked it by excitedly checking a link was still working.

So my suggestion is to check out www.visitlondon.co.uk, www.londonnet.co.uk and www.timeout.com/london for lots of free ideas that you can do in the city. Also check out all the 2for1 deals for eating on MSE and www.handbag.com as well as www.tfl.gov.uk for getting around.

For my money (or rather lack of) I would suggest checking out the markets such as Portobello (antiques/bric a brac/cool shops) and Borough (foodie) on a Saturday or Commercial Road and Brick Lane on Sundays. They take you into parts of the city that you might not otherwise see and you'll have a lovely time hopefully 'just browsing'.

You might still get a cheaper ice skate at Somerset House - very glam. Many of the museums are free including the V&A, Science Museume, bits of Tate Modern and Tate Britain, the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum. Oh and the South Bank is a lovely walk in the evening from Southwalk passed the London Eye along to practically Big Ben and there are sometimes free concerts inside the National Theatre or the Royal Festival Hall.

I hope you have a fab time. I went with a friend for pre-Christmas shopping and we did lots of this stuff as well as walking our feet off and such a fun time - I hope you will too.

Wow JoeyJimbles do you mind if I nick some of your recommendations - I live and work in London and I think your advice is great - will have to try some of those myself :o shameful isn't it ! I can definitely recommend Brick Lane for a curry - cheapest, best around and lots of choice

Have fun down in the ol smoke Flower08 !!
