mommyme - you said earlier in the thread that you were worried that the dog could break through a single glazed door or window. This is possible - friends had a collie who used to go crazy when the postman came. They had a glass door and the dog could see the postman. It used to scrabble at the glass, totally out of control. One day it was in the back room when it heard the postman and charged up the hall and went straight through the glass. The dog was so shocked that it didn't attack the postman but I wouldn't be sure that this would stop a guard dog.

I hope you get a solution to this awful problem soon. I would be very unhappy living next to a dog like this and its owners.

I really do not want to derail this thread any further, however, I feel there is a point to be made here.

One very responsible dog owner of my acquantance is a young man in his early twenties with Down's syndrome who is the proud owner of a springer spaniel. I presume he would fail your IQ tests, just as he would have been selected out by Hitler. I do not dislike you, I do not know you in any meaningful sense but I find your ideas both cranky and offensive. Enforced sterilisation and excluding "thick people" from full participation in society do strike me as offensive and unreasonable.

It may also be worth considering that people with a criminal record can have children and work with children (dependant on the nature of the offense) but you believe they should not be responsible for a dog.

Of course I appreciate the gravity of the subject matter, however, sensationalising it and playing up the threat is not helpful.

I particularly find this distateful - "Congratulations you just spat on the memory of every holocaust victim and every soldier who died in battle in that war." righto. Thats logical, thanks for that.
I never advocated forced sterilisation- you are a liar
I never advocated excluding 'thick people' from full participation in society - again you are a liar
I said that people should have to fulfil certain requirements to own a dangerous dog.
Again you use strawman arguments because you cannot argue your corner without them.
You had better contact the Royal College of Surgeons too because I'm pretty sure they exclude 'thick people' from conducting brain surgery.
Thus according to your ridiculous strawman argument that is offensive and unreasonable because they exclude some people from full participation in society
And I don't agree with people with criminal records working with children either, but how is your point relevant - yet again you drag up another strawman argument

And your Hitler comments were deeply offensive and did spit on the memory of all who died.
Comparing having tighter restrictions on who can own a dangerous dog with gassing millions of people. That is disgusting!
You are the one sensationalising it dragging Hitler into the debate. That's when you aren't dragging it off topic.......again.

  • UPDATE NUMBER 2!!!

police have just called round. He's had a word with next door, they told him that yes they did have a pub and although he isnt a "trained" guard dog he was a guard dog (make sense?) they are putting a fence up "later this year" and they can not move furniture (apprently there house is crammed full of stuff there is no where to put it) the officer said he believes the dog would have no trouble getting out the window even if he didnt have a chair to stand on. He has suggested i get back onto the housing authority and tell them they need to put up a higher fence and has gave me a reference number to give to them to say this is what the police have suggested. The officer said that next door have told him that they do muzzle the dog when he goes outside (funny how ive never seen him with one on then) and that they try to keep him away from the window by leaving the curtains shut - to be fair they do close the curtains but he shoves his head round the curtain. Next door said there dog has been teased by the local kids (ive seen this happen once and i shouted at them and they havent been back since) and they have had stones thrown at the window (ive seen this happen once when the women next door was gobbing at some kids for playing football and they lobbed a pebble) the police have said that i can use "any force nessecary to protect" both myself and DD. I've showed him the spade etc and he said he would have something there too if it was his family. I mentioned that someone had said i might get done for animal cruelty and he said its a load of cobblers. Because i have confronted next door, made the housing association aware and the police that there is a vicious dog and the police have marked it down then i will not be prossecuted if i defend myself. They said at the moment he is happy that some changes are going to be made. Ive got to give it a few weeks (he said 2) and if nothing changes there are other avenues i can go down but unless i can get photo evidence of the dog on our yard theres little more he can do.

Next call to the council on monday then!

Off to bed, have a massive migrane!

    Take care x

Thanks Mommyme for the update. Well make sure you get piccies of the dog if it appears in your garden again! And just for good measure if you can when he's walking the dog if it doesn't have a muzzle on (and a halti is not classed as a muzzle :) ) - I didn't think they could do much about the window appearances either sadly but at least they are aware that the police are paying attention to them and the control they have or don't have over the dog.
Let us know how you get on with the housing association on monday - if you need any help dafting letters just shout :)

It is possible to re-home such dogs but most rescues wouldn't touch him with a bargepole and rightly so... (sorry just catching up from last night) - i know someone who used to rehome rotties - problem ones - and retrain them to be working dogs etc if at all possible - any that weren't re-homable he kept at a secure facility where they were cared for by him in safe sorroundings - now he used to train police and military dogs for a living so definitely not something for your ordinary trainer or rescue. And even he had some dogs he was seriously thinking about putting down for safety reasons.
Without seeing this dog it's impossible to determine if it could be safely retrained to become a working dog or not - I would certainly not recommend based on mommyme's accounts that it ever be rehomed to a family or domestic situation the risk of an attack is simply too great.
That means it's not a simple rehoming but IF they wanted to find it a new home it should be possible - so long as they are willing to do their home work and put a little work in. I would guess however that they are not... :)

  • Mommyme - sounds positive so far - so what changes has the policement suggested should be made within the next two weeks - that the neighbours sort out it jumping at the window and that you press the HA for fencing to be raised??

I wonder if there is anything re: pets/dogs in your (and the neighbours) HA contract? Some do specify things about keeping dogs under control and them not being a nuisance... may be worth checking your contract, as the more you have to press the HA with the better!!

I think now the police have been involved the neighbours will be more careful, let's hope so anyway, and let's hope this situation is soon resolved.

ETA- Lilibeth - please do clarify (as asked several times) where I have advocated someone keeping a stolen dog?
PM is fine as it's really not fair to the OP to keep this stupidity going on here.

I think FC was pointing out that disabled people that are often thought of as 'thick' & maybe have learning difficulties CAN & DO often (Not in all cases, but often) make excellent Dog Owners, it just so happened the guys Dog was a Spaniel.
  • ... and that of course, any breed of dog can be dangerous - google 'rage syndrome' - it is found in spaniels predominantly - however, I am not telling people to ban spaniels, just to exercise common sense and have some perspective.

However, as Mommyme says, she couldnt give a flying fig what breed the dog next door is, she just wants it kept under controll!!!
