    UUUHHHHHH WRONG
I have 4 acctually.. don't assume, asumption is the mother of all !!!! ups.. 3 girls 1 boy aged 16 /14/9 and 6

I also Happen to have a BIG DOG & actually KNOW what I am talking about. I took the time to learn ALL there is to know about my breed and big Spitz type dogs. So DONT think you can assume anything Mely. The OP is to me just posting some weird stuff (got DUTCH courage) and I find that some posters here are the kind that seem to be not very nice people (Poisening and shooting animals is ok?????)

Im sorry but you know Jack. YOUR dogs my be trained and under control but the one next door isnt. if you ACTUALLY took the time to read the thread then you would know things rather than making assumptions. Your lucky you have 4 kids, i have DD and without her i wouldnt be here. I'm not going into it but ive been told not to have any more kids. Im LUCKY to have DD, there is NO WAY i would let anything hurt her and if the dog next door grabs her, i'll kill him if i have to. Do you honestly think i care about being prosecuted? I'd die for her if i had to, Being put in prision for protecting your child is nothing. At least she'd be alive. And no i dont agree with animal crulty but neither do i agree with standing back and watching my DD being ripped to bits by a dog whose owners refuse to control him.

Mommyme.... thats the problem i had understanding why 'Dutch' was more interested in the dogs welfare than a childs!
I know id try to kill a dog if it tried to hurt any child and not just my own! Children come first!

Dutch...its just that you seem to prioritise dogs over children so i couldnt help thinking you didnt have any with your attitude.
You were very unfair to the op (as you hadnt read all the posts),as you suggested she let her little girl look out of the window at the snarling dog!
If you all got the Idea that I put dogs before kids you are wrong. but I just find it weird that the child has the opportunity to see this dog at all, if mum knows he is out there. Being a Dad I would ensure my kids would not ever be able to see this going on. There is a good chance this child with grow up with a fear for larger dogs, without any real need for it. Would I kill the dog, no. No mater how dangerous that dog would be. Instead of a gun or a shovel have a fire extinguisher available by the door. If he does come in, the sound and the foam that comes out of it will make him stand down straight away. It will be 100% more effective then either of the other two. Also it is considered reasonable force (The police uses this method to controle Criminal guard dogs).

I am leaving this thread now as I think we all will have to agree to disagree.

Totally agree with this, I adore animals, if I didn't have mine I wouldn't be here & having my Dog is helping me immensely BUT I could not stand by & watch a Dog attack ANYONE, child or not, yes even a Cat! I'd be mauled myself defending who or whatever a Dog had hold of. If the only way to remove the Dog & ensure safety is to kill it then I wouldn't think twice.

And no, I don't have kids, I can't, but that doesn't stop me wishing every second of everyday that I could & I know how strongly I feel, so a Parent must feel that so so much more. I'm sorry but how can anyone sit & LET a Dog maul or bite a child or adult for that matter without doing all they can to stop it.

Dutch...the dog is visible when the op and her daughter go home at the front of the house. What is op to do...put a paper bag over her daughters head everytime they go home?

Have you seen Dog Borstal? Mic Martin is ex police & military, if it's this easy why does he say to pull the front legs apart as hard as you can? I'd worry that this could make the Dog worse, into a frenzy, it might even grab the extinguisher & i've done a Fire Warden course, if your child is being attacked, VERY few people would take the time to get & operate an extinguisher. Most would act on instinct.

How could you stop a child from seeing the Dog? If you cover their head they'll think there's even more reason to panic? And maybe they'll be more scared not knowing where it is & that it's safe.

Dutch - please just read the first few pages of the thread before commenting. The dog is in a SHARED path. I HAVE to walk up the pathway to get into my house. I TRIED using the back door but the dog has on a few occasions beein outside, he has jumped the fence and ran for us. My DD is 15 months old, she doesnt understand that she needs to run indoors. other occasions he sits at the bottom of the yard where there are trees, i can not see him as it is dark when we get in so it is SAFER for us to use the front door.
