Hi Sarah, just posted on "our other site" to you LOL...

People... lets get away from this "ban the big dogs" it isn't going to happen Final. should it?....No, should more owners take their dogs to classes? Yep. to get back to the reason for this post: can the police or the RSPCA do anything about this dog? not as long as he doesnt' bite any one, simple.

Sarah...its the breed too. Why have such a dog. Is it an ego booster?

I have a rottweiler.......he isn't an ego booster to me! If you look at their origins they were breed to both herd animals and protect the herd from predators.....they are the size and strength they are because they needed to be to move cattle. The strong will comes from the ability to turn a herd of animals much larger them by force of personality and they were often left to guard a herd on their own without human supervision so intelligent dogs were required.

These days, if well trained and handled they are superb house dogs, in fact it isn't recommended that they are kennelled as they crave human companionship....they are very intelligent so easily trained to a high standard, extremely persistant by nature so will work until they solve a problem or drop, very attached and protective of all their family/household even while they do tend to attach more to one person, very loving and affectionate dogs who are "puppish" to a very late age.

The downside of the above is that they are bright enough to take advantage of handlers that are weak, not nessasarily physically but they can sniff out inconsistancy at 100 paces and are persistant enough to exploit it.....the trainability can be exploited by "bad" handlers and used in an antisocial manner, as can many other breeds for that manner. They do tend to be strong willed also.

Summing up the above, they are mentally similar to border collies just with an independant streak, physically they are only bigger because they were bred to herd larger animals than sheep!

    Hope that answers your question!

Really well if I was the OP & I was told nothing can be done & thats it! I would give it a nice steak covered in rat poison the next time it jumped into my garden.

I would protect my child at any costs;)

Thank you Orlao....a lot of owners wouldnt be able to train such type of dog. And is exactly why i think they shouldnt be kept as pets.
  • im still here - somewhere! its just took me an hour to read through all the posts and a lot of arguing!

I want to put a few things on this post that have already been said but thats because theres new people joining in and they havent read the full post.

Firstly the dog is a rottie x alsatian - frankly i couldnt give a flying (AHEM) what breed it is, it is scaring my LO so much that she is screaming when she gets near home and saying "bad dog" The only reason it concerns me that it is a rottie x alsatian is because if it grabs her, i CAN NOT pick it up or kick it away easily. If it was a jack russell or small dog i would pick it up, lob it as far as i can, grab DD and leg it. But saying that - if it was a smaller dog it wouldnt be getting over the fence or up at the window. The concern with the window is that he sees people, he jumps on a chair which is next to the window and RAMS it to get out. He is not simply barking. A barking dog wouldnt bother me, but when he is slamming himself against the window, and it is only a SINGLE paned window, It wont take him long to realise that with a little more force the window will give way - and dont give me the "oh no it wont" you try coming up the garden path, trying to keep you DD calm so shes not frightened whilst the dog rams itself and snarls at you and all you have going through your mind is "where are we going to go if he gets out" the path is walled in, if he gets out he will be blocking my front door so i have NO WHERE to go, I can not use the back door because they let him out, he jumps the fence and lurks at the bottom of my yard where the security light doesnt reach. The RSPCA can not do anything, the police have said that if the owners do not keep him under control they will get a court order to get the dog.

No i dont know what his intention is but lets face it, hes snarling, hes growling and barking and he's ramming at the window, and if were out on the back yard and he gets over he is running at us. Its a pretty safe bet he isnt wanting a stroke. I dont intend to let him get near me or my DD to see what his intentions are either.

im not going to post pick but the perosn who said the police couldnt do anything if dog bite DD - i understand you thought i was talking about the Dog getting my dog but believe me, if he ever gets a hold of my DD, i wont need the police. i'll shoot him myself. (And before anyone picks this would be a last resort but i WILL NOT wait on the police to come out and get him under control. He could of killed my DD by then)

The neighbours didnt warn me he was vicious to deter me. They used to own a pub, the dog was a GUARD DOG and NOT a pet. He isnt used to being cooped up and nor should he be. He would be fantastic as a guard dog BUT NOT IN A 2 BEDROOMED HOUSE.

Have been at work today, police said they would try and get hold of owners today but i couldnt ring from work as been in meetings all day, when i did get a chance to ring the phone was going to answer machine so i have no idea whats going off. Im gonna get up early tomorrow and ring again.

Not been here to speak to any of other neighbours that have stopped me in the street but i'll see most of them over the weekend so will grab them and see if they will write a statement - not sure if they can give anonimus statements as i know a few are scared but i dont think these will hold up.

When the police went round the other day the son of the neighbour was in and was hiding - my mum saw him coming out of the house just after the police left.

I will try and update over the weekend but im not planning on staying in and waiting for next door to come round!

    Have a nice evening x

Im afraid that is where you are wrong. The dog is going to be assessed. If he is deemed to be vicious and out of the owners control they are going to be taken to court and the court will issue for the dog to be taken away BEFORE it gets to the stage of biting someone. He is being classed as a danger because he is getting out, he is chasing people and he is posing a threat. They have every right to take the dog off the owners and they are able to do so.

Dutch...so if a child of yours was at risk from being KILLED you wouldnt think the same way? Dont be silly! The poor little mite is terrified to go home fgs!
  • I can understand how you are feeling & it must be so scary for you & your family.
The issue here is that the dog requires to be secure so that it cant get out i do hope that the police can do something to help and make you feel safe as that is all that anybody wants. you are totally aware of who lies at fault in all this - the owners not the dog

Trust me, i wouldnt think twice about killing him if i needed to although this would only be if i couldnt get him off my daughter and i already have a spade waiting at the back door in case he ever gets hold of DD
