What gets me in this is the people who have essentially said "oh, they're kids, doesn't matter about their jobs!" - er, I know several students for whom their job is what means they can eat.
For all you know, they might HAVE kids. And if they don't, so what? They do NOT deserve to be treat like dirt! The shop floor staff are not the ones who've wronged you. The people you want to hate are the high management and admins - the shop staff don't deserve people squaring up to them !!!!!!!
As for those saying it's worse that their kid won't get their present - yes, that is incredibly sad, and I feel very sorry for any child who has been left sans presents. However, if it were my child, I'd be explaining that it's horrible, but the poor guys behind the counter are the ones who might not have a job at all soon.On the up

Exactly right. People I know working in Zavvi have children, mortgages and responsibilities.0 -

Tbh any child who thinks xmas is all about getting a zavvi voucher will be better off getting fook all :rotfl:0 -
My husband was given £45 of vouchers from colleagues in work as he is recovering from cancer operations. Boxing Day was the first time he felt well enough to go use them. The colleagues do not know yet that they are worthless.
I went ballistic in the shop and demanded the goods as they had already been paid the money - what would it be called if I took money and did not provide the goods??? They threatened to throw me out!!!
There was no notice of any kind at the entrance to the store and it wasn't until you got to the check out did you find out. We had spent over half an hour picking stuff out and my husband was starting to feel very unwell and just wanted to leave. As we left the manager was putting a flipchart up warning people.
Sent the letter to Zavvi today. A colleague got caught the same way with Fop which is now trading again but would not accept the vouchers he purchased before they went under.
The manager kept saying we are losing our jobs and thats much worse than our predicament. Try telling a cancer victim losing a job is worse than having cancer. My husband would prefer to lose his job any day rather than have cancer.
Unfortunately you cannot just walk in hand over the voucher and leave as the security alarm goes mad.I'm stressed enough over this - please don't add to it.:eek:0 -

I do not agree. An upset kid is much worse. I am not being funny but there are lots of shops you can get a job in. If your kid has lost all their chrimbo pressies like the poster who had got £100 for his kid only to have to buy everything again from amazon to save the kid from heartbreak is worse in my opinion.
Id love to see the demographics of staff emplyed by zavvis. 1.3 were temops anyway and the rest are kids probably with no mortgages or kids to support.
Its crappy when your company goes under. Mine has been in the hands of the adminsitrators since May but you can get another job.
I wonder, have you tired getting a job in the current climate. My partner has been looking since September and even then it was only a case of being in the right place at the right time and he has a taken a step back, going back to blue collar rather than white collar which in terms of stress etc... will probably be a good thing. However, he applied for hundreds of jobs and and have barely heard from any of them or received replies saying 'sorry there is now a freeze on recruitment now because of the current climate'. Seriously love, if you think retailers are going to be taking on extra staff in the current climate, then I think you are completely delusional.
Yes it is upsetting for a child to lose their Christmas, but that is one Christmas present in one Christmas and there are ways and means of making that up to a child if needs be. Most children receive more than one pressie anyway. I was given vouchers for Xmas and would have been gutted had I not been able to spend them, but it isn't life and death, it's a few quids worth of vouchers, so get some perspective!!!! Perhaps the upset child has learned a valuable, although very harsh lesson, that sometimes things go wrong or they can't always their own way.
I feel for the staff who have lost their jobs in this way. My daughter was in this situation when Dolcis went bankrupt and the attitude of some customers was appalling. She was 17 years old, and granted, had no responsibilities as such but was working very hard to support her education and was very upset about the whole thing. I don't care whether they have 25 dependents at home or no dependents at home, losing your job through no fault of your own is pants!!!!! Give the staff a break.

sorry to hear about your husband Chris.
Look, the situation sucks for lots of people. The administrators, are trying to sell part of the business, some stores I am told etc so many staff will be fine.
The vouchers is a kick in the plums. I don't buy the story you should not buy vouchers etc - they have been around for years and many peopekl want them as they are saving for soemthing.
Also there are lots of Zavvis suppliers that are going to take a bath too. Many contracts termianted and fees lost that will result in job losses etc.
The economy sucks. Jobs are hard to get, my brother just got on as a cleaner after losing his other one. Its a third of his last salary but its a job.
I do not agree with stealing goods, shouting at staff or cancelling gift vouchers. Thems my views and I am sticking to themSelf confessed Florida expertwith over 320 trips there!

This is very sad and very unfortunate but it is still money and I would have thought the perspective of someone suffering with a life threatening disease would be a little more charitable tbh.I went ballistic in the shop and demanded the goods as they had already been paid the money - what would it be called if I took money and did not provide the goods??? They threatened to throw me out!!!
I am not surprised. I don't care what anyone has been through, how ill they are or how stressed they are there is no need to abuse other human beings. As has been discussed to death it isn't the shop staff making the rules, they are carrying them out.The manager kept saying we are losing our jobs and thats much worse than our predicament. Try telling a cancer victim losing a job is worse than having cancer. My husband would prefer to lose his job any day rather than have cancer.

I suspect the manager was referring to the loss of £40 over the loss of the jobs, rather than the cancer. I don't think for one second anyone would suggest that losing a job was worse than having cancer. You can't expect people to know you whole history, so whilst the comment was a bit crass under the circumstances I think you honestly knew what he really meant. Let's face it, you were probably not the first person that day to give him grief.
This is a sad tale and very unfortunate and I feel for you all, I really do but that still doesn't excuse abusing staff who are trying to earn a living while they can.

I don't think anyone here (or in normal society) is comparing losing a job to having cancer. Of course, we all know which is worse, and there is no comparison. The issue here is losing money (hopefully not a huge amount, although some people will have lots in vouchers) in comparison to losing a job in a market that's struggling to stay afloat.
Everyone with a gift voucher has the 'right' to that money, but no one has the 'right' to abuse and attack innocent people. The fact that people are going 'ballistic' at staff just shows how misplaced their anger is.
Please don't misinterpret my posts - I really do feel for everyone missing out because of the Zavvi management's policies. I feel especially sad for vunerable and elderly people and children... but this situation is being handled in completely the wrong way.0 -
