Zavvi Gift Cards

I knew that Zavvi was in trouble and was going to rush out to use my vouchers which I had received as presents. I was very very annoyed to find out that the administrators have restricted the use of gift cards as a form of payment, not much help to me £40 that I can't use. It's funny how when the company was selling these the customers were to treat them as cash so if lost they could not be replaced yet now the company is in financial trouble we are not allowed to treat them as cash for the purposes of purchasing goods. It clearly even states this on the back of the cards:
This card is only reedemable against goods in zavvi stores in the UK.
This card cannot be exchanged for cash or other vouchers/giftcards or used in Sound Control
Yet if you have purchased after 27th November 2008 they will exchange them back for cash, they seem to make the rules up to suit themselves. There needs to be tighter controls on these giftcards and I propose that companies selling these giftcards are required to provide the facilities to pay back the value of all gift cards as they only have the money from us on the basis we can use it to get stuff from their shops!!! If they will not let us purchase goods then they should return the money, as its not theirs!!!
I feel that administrators are allowing companies to take advantages of their customers especially as in Zavvi's case the management company are still in charge of the day-to-day running of the company (more shareholder final bonuses i wonder??)
Anyone else got any views on this???

wipe ur a rse on them an post them to zavi managing director? i hate companies that know theyre hitting administration but continue to sell stuff like vouchers0

I went in there to buy some gift vouchers a few weeks before xmas however they wouldnt sell me any, promptly leading me to believe they were in some trouble.
I told everyone i knew not to buy any from there or big purchases, i would have to say to anyone, dont buy gift vouchers from any company now, too risky given the climate.0 -
As a gift card holder, you are essentially just another unsecured creditor to the company. Unfortunately you will be last in line to get your money back.poppy100

I know it really sucks but they decided I (my relatives who purchased) was (were) important when they were purchased but they are happy to leave me out in the cold, really feel like storming into my local store and picking up stuff to the value and walking out. Its not like i'm stealing it they've already had the money upfront!0

it will be you the redundant zavvi staff matching off with anything salvagble when they dont recieve ther next paypacket!0

If the store was still open and selling stuff, which I believe it still is? I would get my stuff, go to pay and DEMAND to be able to use the vouchers. I would even consider leaving the vouchers on the desk and walk out of the store.. I would not take no for an answer, I suggest you dont take no for an answer either.. Dont make the stores problems your problem.0

This is on the zavvi website:Q: I have a Zavvi gift voucher, can I redeem it?
It is expected that all customers who purchased zavvi gift vouchers from zavvi stores from 27 November 2008 will receive a full refund in respect of the unredeemed value of the gift vouchers. Unfortunately, it is not possible for vouchers to be redeemed in stores.
All customers who have unredeemed vouchers acquired since 27 November 2008 should write to the Joint Administrators at the following address, quoting their voucher number(s), enclosing the original voucher(s) and quoting their full name and address for return correspondence:
zavvi Vouchers
c/o The Joint Administrators of zavvi Group
Ernst & Young LLP
100 Barbirolli Square
Manchester
M2 3EY
We recommend that customers keep a copy of vouchers for their records.
Regrettably, it will not be possible to refund vouchers acquired prior to 27 November 2008. Customers with unredeemed vouchers acquired prior to 27 November 2008 should write to the Joint Administrators at the above address, asking for their claim to be registered as an unsecured claim.
Please note, due to the large volumes of vouchers that are currently outstanding it is not possible to discuss individual customer queries in person at this stage.0 -
Rob: If you send a letter to the administrators you would stand no chance getting any money back, lets be honest. Its not like Joe Public will get its money before the adminitrators take their cut, and the other companies dealing with Zavvi get paid what they are owned.0

I think the sad thing about Zavvi vouchers is they're most likely to have been given by little grannies. They were out of their depth with modern music and you'd have probably already got what they bought, so vouchers were the answer.
They put their little threadbare coats on in the freezing cold to go and buy the vouchers, having put a little aside each week towards Xmas from their pension. Seeing the cash for your vouchers as they set off for the shops would have given them a nice warm glow that they were giving you some joy for Xmas.
Poor little old grannies0
