The first customer number they gave me didn't work, but I managed to log in by entering my date of birth and characters from my security number and password, at which point the customer number they had already given me, and with which I had tried, unsuccessfully, to log in, was displayed on screen, presumably so I could "get it right next time".

I tried logging in with the customer number again a few days later, and that attempt failed too. Unfortunately, after entering my date of birth I was asked to enter characters 7, 8 and 9 from my password. Guess what? My password has fewer than 9 characters.

This sounds similar to my situation. The box where you enter your customer number (DOB) will only accept 6 numbers, yet the customer number I was given has an extra number on the end. The way I have be 'logging on' is that way you describe - using the lost password route. There's no obvious way of rectifying this, they don't have an email address for queries just a phone number (0845 I think). I was getting so annoyed by their general incompetance (this is after it took ages and involved posting multiple forms to them) I decided to tell them to poke it and withdraw my money. But wait, I can't withdraw it now because I need a card reader. I've applied for one, gawd knows when that will arrive.

I'll be making a sharp exit as soon as the damn thing arrives. I went to Tesco after my Sainsbury's Internet Saver dropped it's rate to 2.25%. I didn't experience any of the problems with Sainsbury's and since I still have the account open I'll probably go back there. They deserve to look after my money more than Tesco.

    Sorry for the rant!

My account has been up and running for over a year with no problems.......

.........BUT I ordered a card reader thingy weeks ago and it has still not arrived.

Why can't it be sent out the same day that it was requested?

My card reader arrived today with a covering letter dated 30th December.

I still cannot understand why they are unable to send them out on the day ordered.

When I ordered mine (this was about July/August 08) I was told, on telephoning to chase it, that they were having a technical problem with a new system whereby online requests for card readers were not reaching the right department, and with not enough card readers being in stock. Not sure just how true that explanation was but, to give them the benefit of the doubt, it was at the time when this account had become very popular. Mind you, months down the line they don't seem to be any more efficient now.

Despite the problems I still rate the account as a good one and I'm glad I was patient.

I only opened one of these accounts last week, so probably months away from getting it up and running!

I probably don't need a card reader as I believe any one will do (with OH and I having NatWest and Nationwide accounts, there are several kicking around), but guess I'll need to order one to get the card. So it's a pity if that particular delay is because of a shortage of card readers. Has anyone been brave enough to try and explain over the phone that they only want a card and don't need a reader?

There are 2 boxes to enter your customer number. You put your DOB in the top box, and the numbers they gave you to put after it in the second box.
  • Well despite the vast majority of posts on the forums about Tesco Personal Finance I went ahead and applied for an Internet Saver (I applied in Nov and am getting the 1.5%bonus rate for 12 months :j ) I had no issues applying on line, although the account did take a while to fully open (8 days from sending back paperwork they send you). I got online fine and since then all has been well, I have remembered all my details! I have called them a couple of times and both of the staff I spoke with were really helpful. I did try to call yesterday with an enquiry about my tax status and it took 15mins to get through - the lady explained they have had a lot of applications right at the end of the bonus period and this was why, fair enough I guess. Seems to have been a lot of bad experiences with them, but its all good when its set up... if you can be patient!
  • finally got a card reader a month after the request but still no card or pin so no transfer out for me yet. Would have told them not to bother if the rate wasnt better than most!

but still no card or pin

im abit slow with this whole card reader thing as ive never used it b4. so u need a seperate tesco card/pin that goes into the card reader. how does it actually work.

im waiting on my reader and in the mean time the money is sat in another lower rate account. its ok having a savings rate that is good but when u work out the amount of intrest lost because of the time it takes to open then not wanting to put the full amount in because u cant get it out until the card reader comes does it really work out much better than an account that u opened in a branch/ over the phone and was up and runnin within a week

Mine's NatWest, and Tesco's should be the same as they work on the same principle.

The reader's like a small, slim hand-held calculator with a slot for the card at the top. Slot in the card, CHIP end in, and key in the PIN which the reader will verify as correct on the LCD display. To verify an online transaction, I am shown on the screen a series of numbers which I then key into the reader (with the card still in place), and the reader in turn produces another number code in its display which I enter into a field online. Transaction verified.

With NatWest, for a traditional current account where you have a debit/guarantee card, you may not need a separate card for the reader, but debit cards last for a few years and some are too old for the reader technology, hence the need for a separate/additional Online Banking Card in order to verify online transactions. On one NatWest account I have only just received a replacement debit card which can be used in the reader, so up till now had to use the 'extra' one I'd applied for to verify online transactions on that particular account.

As the Tesco account is a savings one you wouldn't have a debit/guarantee card, yet they use the same system to operate the account so you need their Online Banking Card.

I believe that if you already have a card reader from another organisation, it can be used for any others which employ the same system, so in theory, for the NatWest accounts (as well as for the Tesco one when it's opened) I could use another reader which Nationwide have also sent me, but I haven't tested this so far by using a NatWest card in the Nationwide reader.

But even with readers from elsewhere, I will still need a card from Tesco specific to their account. However I expect to get both as part of the deal, so will end up with yet another reader as well -- bringing my collection to 4 readers altogether!

my first driect debit into my tesco account was due to go in today. just moved a small amount to see if it worked ok. it was due in this morning. my current account shows the money has left but its not in my tesco account. does it take a while to show up in your account or should it be there straight away as has always been the case with other accounts
