Cat getting neutered

  • We had our two kittens (one boy, one girl) neutered in the summer. As others have said, they needed something light to eat - and were obviously ravenous having gone without breakfast that day. The boy kitten was his usual self by the next morning, the girl took a little longer and had to wear a collar until her stitches came out cos she kept licking the area (the vet said that cats can undo stitches just by licking cos of their rough tongues!). I expected her brother to be a nuisance and keep wanting to play, or pull at her stitches, but he did neither and was actually really gentle with her. On the other hand, she refused to allow it to stop her jumping up on things even if you could see her actually wince everytime she did.

Thanks for helping shed some fears. I guess I just worry to much, lol i'm going be be neurotic when I have children!!

I've decided to have my kitties microchipped at the same time, after reading some threads on here about lost animals and especially the one where the cat came home after 2 years!!!

    Less than a week now!

Hi, all cats do react different to the anaeasthetic & some may be a little spaced out on the first night depending on what drugs they have been given but as long as they are kept warm (temp can drop during operations under GA) & as quiet as poss(maybe keep in 1 room) they should be fine.
Some cats are very good at getting their sutures out esp if 2 of them as they may groom each other so may be very important to keep their lampshade collars on for the first 24-48hrs esp.
You may not want to give them anything too rich to eat as anaesthetics can give them a bit of an upset tummy so perhaps plain chicken/fish as a treat.
I have worked as a veterinary nurse for 10 years & the anaesthetics today are so much more safe, I am sure they will be fine, they are little cuties!
Oh & getting the chipped under GA def better cus it is a big needle for such little ones & we get a lot of unchipped cats handed in that you can tell have an owner but there is liitle chance we can find them without these chips!
Nice to know there are some responsible & caring owners out there, hope this helps a bit.

Our female kitten was spayed this morning, still a bit disorientated as she can't get used to the collar, she had a few bix and is now asleep/resting under the bed. she has to go back for antibiotic jab on saturday, then her stitches come out the following sat. Our vet (we're in spain) wants her to keep the collar on for the whole week...really not too sure about that. The op cut is very small, about 2 inches. The other cats we've had done have been much bigger, apparently she's had her ovaries as well as her uterus taken away. she had no trouble jumping on the sofa or bed, but has been very quiet.
  • Awww they are so cute. We had Oscar done and mirco chipped a couple of months ago and the vet gave us some packets of food for his next couple of feeds after the operation. Other than his back legs being wet he was back to normal (well normal for him!) after he had eaten.

My kitten is called Harry and he is 6 months old, and is due to be done. Was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a problem with him not wanting to eat, I have bought endless sachets of felix and whiskers, he will not eat them, I have bought tins and dry food, somebody told me to try IAMS, so I bought a small packet of that as it is sooo expensive for the big bag, and yet he still does not want to eat much, he will eat a little but not a lot, say half a sachet.

I really must get my baby Hannah to the vet next week to book her in. She's nearly 8 months old and started 'calling' a couple of weeks ago.... Luckily she is not allowed outside.

Sarahdol, sounds like harry just has a small appetite... as long as he is growing well and doing everything a kitten usually does.

I think my little Suki has gone into heat. Poor little thing she seems so confused. She is very needy of attention and will meow for hours crawling around the floor. She also follows my partner around the house whereas she usually pays him no attention. Her sister Missi seems fine and looks at Suki oddly.

Will this cause any problems come tuesday when shes due to be neutered?

EDIT: When I first got mine Suki was the same, I would feed little Harry little but often, maybe leave the food down all the time. I notice that most of the dry food gets eaten overnight in my house, or when I'm not watching as I never see them eat it but I'm always refilling it.

Thankyou, was getting a bit worried about him not eating much, friends have cats and kittens, and they all say they eat loads. Will keep an eye on him, he is not loosing weight and still very playful, so he must just be a small eater, not like his mum lol.

    .

Ask the vet - I am not sure re: cats. Its also worth letting him check of she actually is...
