Fear not, there are no un-neutered toms in my area, I am the only one with cats in my road and the two in the close behind are both female so I know there will be no "surprises"!! Would have to be the "immaculate conception"!!!
They only go for a bomb round the garden and beat the apple tree up so not out for long, but I agree anyone living where there are lots of other cats around and most certainly un-neutered toms it would be safer to keep female kittens in until they are "done"

Jane, we believe my brothers was 'fathered' by a stray / ferral cat as she came home scratched to high heaven and the kittens definately had the rough and ready look about them (even the vet commented on this).

Its not a nice thing for them to go for either, they are basically raped by toms (toms are apparently not that nice!) including being pinned down and can be attacked (brothers was).

If theyre just playing in the garden then thats different lol. But I def think its not worth the risk :)

hmm you wouldn't know if there were any, they come from miles away. ALL Cats should be kept in unless supervised & preferably on a lead, until done. If I had £1 for everyone who said it won't happen to me, there's no toms in my area, they never go out much etc

I had my cat spayed yesterday. She was in full caterwauling season for a few nights before we managed to get her booked in - jeeeez the noise, thought the Exorcist had had a baby in the house ... Our local vet charged £69 (inc.VAT), and we also had her chipped whilst there, and wormed. Pretty much a full service! and scant change from £100. Worth it though, as I dread to consider the situation had she been keen on leaving the house prior to her obvious signs of heat!

This is the same little cat who came a-knocking at my door at the end of January. Still no sign of any owners coming forward. The Vet noted that she was a lot healthier yesterday than in January - nice & strong, and a good weight. He also said we should think of her as our own now, but I might give it a few more weeks.

Completely agree, the only way to be totally safe is to spay/neuter before letting them outside. I would never risk it as your sweet and friendly girl who stays in the back garden will have a complete personality transplant when calling and you won't see her for dust.

In fact, evilsheep's description is very accurate!
