Whether two females or two males or one of each they should *not* go out until neutered. You can Spay when the vet says you can, many do it before 6 months apparently nowdays. If one of each (But i'm assuming by your thread title 2 females) then ask the Vet as they can breed at that age.
  • I too have two kittens (girls) who are just over 5 months old now and was advised by my vet when they had their jabs recently to wait until they were at least 6 months old as they were still too tiny although one of them will be a small cat anyway as an adult as her parents were quite petite. My 2 older girls I had speyed at 5 1/2 months with no problem. If I see any signs of them coming into season I shall be at the vets with them pronto as they are beginning to go out now!

My Tom Cat was neutered very young by what was a relatively new procedure at the time - 1999 (think he would have been just shy of 4 months).
My female cat was already spayed when we adopted her so didn't have to worry about that but I am sure the vet will tell you when they are in for their jabs.

I think these things tend to vary. I have a "dental bunny" who is a very small nethie. He is technically old enough to be neutered but has so far has had two operations and now has to go for his injections. The vet feels we should wait for him to fully recover from the ops and gain some weight before going under the knife again so my advice would be to check with the vets when they tend to do it and when he thinks is right for your pet.
  • I would have them neutered as soon as you can. I had my two girls (sisters) speyed at 5 months old. They were already in heat. The vet said he wished he had done the procedure sooner, but the practice had a 5 month min age.
  • When we got ours (a male) we were advised by the rescue centre to wait until he was at least 6 months to ensure he had developed enough. We got it done when he was about 7 months as I wanted to be on the safe side. Guess it depends on the kitten and the vet should know if it's too early.

Please do not let them out before they are done!!!

My brother did this and his 5 month old cat had 7 (yes 7!!) kittens!!

The vet explained after that they dont have to go into season as such for them to get pregnant. Theyre reproductive systems start working at about 4 months although they wont show this!! So Jane please get them done or dont let them out!

  • We let our male kitten out into our yard (high walls which he didn't even consider jumping) a bit before we got him neutered so he could get used to the outside a bit. We kept an eye on him and only let him out for a few minutes at a time though.

If you don't have this option, I'd agree it's best not to risk it.

Females need `doing' earlier than males for some reason. Personally if they are boys I would still let them outside, girls too actually but then you would be taking a chance of them coming home with grand-furbabies!

I wouldnt, we have too many unwanted cats as it is, and I am not sure that early pregnancy is good for cats!
