I suppose it depends on breastfeeding too - if I'm breastfeeding sucessfully, it'll be a fair bit easier than if I'm bottle feeding. Flight is the main problem, 10 hours is quite a long time. I'd hope the baby would just sleep through! Shall wait and see what the baby is like. I think I'm pretty decided, don't think OH will be going anywhere without me, I'd miss my free holidays too much!
I'm comfortable with Korea - its very easy to access an English speaking Pharmacist and Doctor there.
Only problem is jabs - how does that work? Are you not supposed to travel before they've had them? Only requirement for Korea is the standard childhood ones, nothing special needed (as long as I'm not staying in a paddy field!).
Thats my 'worry' thing for the moment. I'm very single minded, seems I find one thing to worry about and all I think about is that, until I find something 'better' to be worried about. At least this takes my mind off the worry of people touching my bump at Christmas!Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0 -

FG & Sami-bee
I posted sporadically in the old thread and realised this morning that it's absolutely AGES since I last posted on thepregnancy thread.
FG - I'm apparently on track for a normal sized baby but as long as she's healthy I really don't care but because I've had rotten luck in the past I'm now under consultant care (which has annoyed the heck out of my community midwife:D) and she's taking really good care of me.
I'm due on 21st April and so far everything's going really well - very little morning sickness that disappeared completely when I was about 10 weeks and no other nasty side effects. I'm a little apprehensive that i'm heading for the delivery from hell!
I did have a really bad summer cold in the early days and I'd used olbas oil (I dab it on any swollen glands that come up in my neck) and I was so panicked that I emailed the makers of olbas to ask about the safety of using it in pregnancy (the bottle I had clearly said not to use it during pregnancy, whereas an older bottle didn't say anything). I got this really nice reply saying that Olbas had been used for over 30 years and that in all likelihood pregnant women had used it wihthout ill effect but that they hadn't got any formal safety data at the moment.

FG - I couldn't comment on Korea, but having been to Japan, I would have no hesitation. They speak English extremely well and is even a prerequisite to enter some Universities. It is an extremely clean country. Okay, the food is very different to what you and i are used to, but if travelling with bubs you may still be breastfeeding (if that is what you are doing) or you can take 'supplies' with you.
I will be taking my bubs to other side of the world with the first six months and the flight will be 22 hours or so. I will be waiting until I time I feel comfortable in being able to manage bubs but of course want my family to see my baby so will make the journey.
Not sure i've been of much help0 -

Mmmmm travelling with babies... Staying in hotels... Long flights?
Finnland I'd not have an issue with personally - Japan & Korea - I just wouldn't be comfortable taking a young child on that long a journey... I'm dreading travelling to Denmark with Bean next year to see the family!! A VERY long flight would be my idea of a nightmare! Cramped space, in my experience small babies scream on flights anyway - i would be ready to throttle it after 10+ hours! Then you have language barriers when you get there. Try asking for medication or getting through to a doctor if there is a problem. Even getting the right milk formula and ensuring the water is clean would give me nightmares...
Travelling in Europe would be on my "maybe list" but Korea and Japan? No sorry... not unless one of you speaks the language and you know you can get the right help and support if you need it... Call me a worry puss!
Finnland though could be a great trip with a little one... and you're more likely to find english speakers there too
Tine you'll be fine going homeChris was no trouble at all with the trips there and back to austria it was the bit in between that caused me trouble but if you're gonna stay with family it will be easy!
and yes I'm calling you a worry wart0 -
Feelie - life is generally what you make it. If you worry about travelling with kids it is likely to be a nightmare....if you make it part of your lives from the off then baby will adjust.
I have friends from Australia who first took their (now 4 year old) daughter back home when she was 3 months. She has made the trip there at least twice a year and has also been all over Europe with them. I joke that I wish to be half as well travelled by the time I am 40!! Because the parents saw it as a necessity to travel then Issy just took it all in her stride.
As for cleanliness - I personally don't think Korea and Japan would be an issue. Certainly the cities in North Korea are spotless and you can drink the water according to my parents. If it is for OH's work then there shouldn't be a problem getting an interpreter if there is anything you need...
If you never try, you will never know...you need to do what is best for all 3 of you.please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
FG it's highly unlikely... on all the transatlantic flights I've been on and even the shorthaul ones where there have been babies they have screamed - a few have settled between take off and landing but the change in pressure upsets them as they don't know how to equalise the pressure...
I'd suggest taking baby on a short flight first to see how easily it settles - if it doesn't then be prepared for a LONG flight with a screaming babby...
It's one of my pet hates when people have babies on flights because I try to get a little sleep when I'm on there, last thing I want is an infant screaming 4 rows away
If going to Japan and Korea you have to sterilise everything for the baby - anything used to wipe it or clean it too... and you have to be careful not to catch any bugs as if you do then you can't breasfeed - and I wouldn't want to try and convince a small baby to take a bottle for the first time whilst feeling icky and that far away from home...
So it's a year with no free holidays... I'm sure you can copeBean is only coming to Denmark because it's fairly close and the family would disown me if we didn't bring Bean over to say hello
Otherwise I'd happily stay in the UK for the first couple of years

Hi feelie - i have no problems with longhaul travel with young babies/children. But then I think it's a confidence thing. I've always travelled a lot ever since I was 6 weeks old and so don't think twice about it - like MrsT said, things are more complicated if oyu don't speak the language so have a good think about how you think you could cope in that situation. I would also suggest that the length of trip has a bearing - if it's less than a couple of weeks, it's probably not worth the hassle long-hual wise and if your OH has to be involved in corporate entertainment while he's away you may find the hotel rooms a bit boring after a while.....
It's a totally personal thing though and i don't think you'll know how you feel about it properly until baby is here.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -

FG - I've never known any baby to sleep all the way through the flight but they do say to try feeding a baby during take off and landing to relieve the ear-pressure build up!
Why not make an apointment to see your practice nurse to discuss immunisations and vaccinations for travelling when baby is born?
I know what you mean about worrying about something until something bigger comes along. I made the mistake of going one professor's lecture to the student docotrs on "medical disorders and complications of pregnancy" words cannot adequately describe my current fears but the picccie tells it about right  ;) At least I've stoppped dreaming that the midwife tells me I've given birth to a fluffy kitten or a batch of snakes!!!
I have my anti-D injection soon and then the Glucose tolerance tests to look forward to but last January I took part in a study looking at different breakfasts and ability to perform manual tasks and each time I had to have my blood sugar levels tested so I have some good baselines for them to refer to!!!DFW Nerd Club #545 Dealing With Our Debtnever attribute anything to malice which can be adequately explained by stupidity, [paranoia or ignorance] - ZTD&[cat]
