LOL I've had one of those things in the back of my hand when I had the last of my baby teeth taken out when I was 16 under GA. They knew I was afraid of needles (much worse than now - this was before I had to have regular thyroid blood tests) and put red dot stickers on my ID wristbands. I was taken down to the theatre with no pre-med and given the GA by face mask.

When I was coming round in the recovery room, lying in the recovery position so hand near my face, I opened my eyes for a second and saw a flash of green. I shut them again but heard the nurses say "Quick, she's waking up, take it out" but must have drifted off again. When I was back on the ward, I realised I had a pinprick in the back of my hand and realised what that flash of green was that I saw! ARGH! _pale_

I hate needles too (so why I donate blood is beyond me!) and when they shipped me to hospital early on in the pregnancy they not only took blood, but put an IV in me... interesting exercise as my veins are pretty thin and with being dehydrated my BP was dropping too and my body just didn't wanna hand anything over voluntarily!
Anyway the only way they could GET fluids in me was drip so they stuck one in the back of my hand  did that before they even took bloods on the basis that they thought I could pass out any minute and didn't fancy trying to get a line in later if my BP dropped further. Yes a needle IS involved but it's honestly not any worse than a scratch (think a cat scratch is probably more painful!) and once it's in then the needle is removed and it's a flexible plastic tube that actually stays in your hand. I was petrified of moving in case it hurt for about the first 24 hours... by lunch time the second day I had moved from being scared to annoyed at having to trawl the darned stand round after me all the time!
Honest honest honest if you have to have an IV it's NOT that painful :) When they say "you'll feel a bit of a scratch" they're pretty accurate... that is about all it is :)

At least this time when I go in if they want to stick one in me without hooking it up for "just in case" then I won't be worried about it :) I'd rather it was in so they can quickly hook me up if need be rather than them struggle with my pain in the back end paper thin veins :)

Or maybe I just change mine and childrens name by deed poll so we all match!

Well, if 2 out of 3 surnames aren't significant to you, then I'd definitely be tempted to change them all to match OH! Suppose it depends on what the eldest two feel about their names though - and whether ex would make a fuss. As for getting married or not, there is no obligation to have a fancy, expensive, white meringue type wedding. Plus, it helps protect your OH if you die intestate (so don't forget to keep your wills updated if you don't get married).
I bought my dress on eBay, was very cheap.

Snap. Mine cost about £40 including shipping, tailor-made from Hong Kong. Just about everything else for the wedding was more expensive than my dress! (Well, my shoes were a few euros from Auchan.)
i am 24 + weeks and feel very large and fed up

Much sympathy. I feel exactly the same. I'm also tired of going to the bathroom so often, eating every 3 hours or so and having insomnia for most of the night.

Oh yeah, there's something I meant to ask... do you have to have the drip thing in the back of your hand, and is there an actual metal needle in it? Those things scare the life out of me!

Depends if you need antibiotics or that stuff to artificially induce contractions. I have a needle phobia and couldn't watch it go in or be removed but apart from that it was fine. Doesn't hurt. Seem to remember it was all plastic and less fragile than I feared (didn't dare flex my hand at first). The antibiotics feel like ice being poured down your veins though!
  • Morning all (yes I'm still here. I think I'll be off to court to get an eviction order tomorrow morning if we've not got anywhere by then ;) ) When DH wakes up, will head to supermarket and farmers market, and possibly do some bits at the allotment, so that might get things moving if we're lucky. I had lots of braxton hicks last night (about 10-15 seconds each about 5 mins apart, felt like reasonably bad period pains) so I thought that might be the start of things, but that didn't turn out to be the case.

After all the talk of crib sheets in the last few days, I realised yesterday that we only had 1 of them! We had been given a bag of bedding for the crib (it was my nephews crib) and when MIL brought it over, she made it all up for us with one of the sets, and we assumed there were more sheets in the bag. But no. So we went out yesterday to get a few more. Nothing like leaving things to the last minute!

Sounds like we were somewhere in the middle with our wedding. We spent around £7000 (about £3500 from my parents, and the rest we paid for) plus DH's parents paid for our honeymoon, and we asked for money as gifts so we could have lots of spending money while we were away - the only time we will ever be able to treat ourselves on holiday like that, so we made the most of it :)

We had the ceremony at Winchester Guildhall, which was very grand without being religious - I think we had to pay about £500 for that, including the registrar and certificates and whatnot, then we went off to the rugby club afterwards. So it wasn't a particularly posh do, but because we weren't paying ~too~ much per person (£15 per head for the sit down meal, plus £5 per head for the evening buffet, plus a bit of wine and we had mead instead of champagne for the toasts :) ), it meant we could have lots of people there (we both have big families, and we wanted friends there too) I think i was about 70 in the day, and another 40 or so friends in the evening. We did as much as we could ourselves too. I got a load of vases from ebay, and bought the flowers, and then we arranged them ourselves. And I bought corsets for me and the bridesmaids, and we made skirts to go with them :) And we spent ages on MIL's floor with the whole of his side of the family cutting and sticking to make the invitations!
