Office shoes and right to refund

Hi guys,
I've been a long time lurker on the MSE forums but only now joined as I have a dilemma and need the council of the MSE forumites!
Basically, last week I bought a (£90) pair of boots for my brother for Christmas from Office. At least, I thought they were the right ones. They looked very similar, but my mum informs me that they're not and the actual boots he wants are a) exclusive to this designer (I forget the name, I'm the least fashionable person ever! lol) and rather annoyingly b) cheaper!
I checked the Office receipt and it said that it does not do refunds - only store credit which is very annoying. Has anyone had any experience of this and have you managed to wrangle a refund out of them? I was told by the saleman that I would be fine to come in for a refund so was blatantly lied to.
Does anyone have any advice or experiences to share?
Many thanks,
MancMan

Buying shoes for someone without them trying them on seems rather precarious at best however as there is nothing wrong with the shoes you have no legal right to a refund your going to have to throw yourself on the stores mercy and hope. Try the same sales person who sold you them."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I wasn't in any doubt over the size - my brother and I have exactly the same size feet; 8.5 left, 9 right.
That sounds like what I'll have to do. If I take the matter higher, i.e. write a formal letter of complaint... would that be of any benefit?0 -

I see no point in writing a letter... Take it into the store see what happens.. Grovel a bit"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

write a formal letter of complaint
Saying what- its not fair i cant return something . . . .
If they have a sign on the counter that clearly states they dont do refunds, they arent doing anything wrong.
Nothing you can do, other than get the voucher and see if you can sell them someone in the que at the shop for a fiver less than what they are worth .0 -
I would definitely attempt to take them back and try and get a refund - I have seen this done by a person who had worn the shoes on a night out and the bow had come off - she decided she didn't want an exchange and pushed the manager for a refund which he eventually gave. Just be pleasant about it - admit that you made the mistake and see if they will be more sympathetic...2020 Mortgage-Free Wannabes #20 £1495.03/£2760 OP0

I bought some uggs in office yesterday and on the counter was their returns policy - i was also asked before i paid to check their returns policy before i parted with my money.
Sorry but shops do not have to give you a refund(even a credit note) unless the item is faulty, but most shops do to give good customer service.
Take them back and treat "your" feet to some new shoes :-), or get your brother to choose different ones(or give him the credit note instead of the shoes then he can choose himself)0 -

If a bow came off, the shoes were faulty and she had more rights than in this situation.
Most likely but the fact was she wasn't going to get a refund yet she kep pushing for it nicely and in the end the manager gave in...on the plus side these boots havn't been worn so they may have a small possibility. I just think the OP should at least try before writing a letter of complaint at the end of the day though theres not much a company can do if you buy the worng shoes2020 Mortgage-Free Wannabes #20 £1495.03/£2760 OP0 -

Under these circumstances, the goods are in good working order, you've simply changed your mind, and so you've got no right to a refund.
You can ask if they can help you out in some way here, a lot of retailers will do something in these circumstances for the sake of good customer service so it might be that the salesman hasn't "blatantly lied to" you after all; the sign might be talking about the minimum they'll do and they might be prepared to do better than that where they can.
However, I'd suggest that store credit is a fair compromise in these circumstances, it's certainly more than they have to give you from what you say of the situation.
I'd also suggest talking to them before posting on forums might be more productive, too.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

The situation described sounds more like a manager trying to deny someone something they had the right to do and giving in when they saw it wasn't working.scottishlass wrote: »on the plus side these boots havn't been worn so they may have a small possibility.
