found deer at side of road, has passed away

on way to take dog to vets saw deer at side of road, told vets, who sent someone out after we had left to look for it,
anyway, we found it still there and so i picked it up and put it in boot,
at vets we had to wait even though there were two vets there, for vet who went out to find it to come back,( she didnt look far mind you, as shed only just left when we had got back, said she had been looking, but she couldnt have gone that far in short time)
anyway, she looked at it in boot, it has no obvious broken limbs, but blood coming from back end,
vet told us the we should take it home, did nothing more, have horrid feeling if we didnt have it she would have left it on roadside,
WHAT i am after is, anyone out there who has an idea about roe deer?
we have put it on soft big hay bed, in shed, its in alot of shock, and who knows what damage internally,
if it dies at least its in dark quiet place,
thanks,

Oh God love you, I don't know what you could do, could you phone RSPCA to come and have look?
    I don't think I'll sleep tonight now.

There should be some kind of wildlife rescue that can help you with it. Perhaps try and Google in your area for somewhere you can contact?
  • Thats awfull poor thing, surely the vets should have contacted the rspca after all i don't expect that vet sees many deer in the surgery! so wouldn't know what dammage it had sustained. I'm sure the rspca would be more helpfull as they deal with this sort of animal, hope he/she survives.

vet actually bothered to look for wildlife place to take it, none nearby at all,
will try a google though, im sure some places will travel to help them.
otherwise i shall keep it if it survives til i can set it free. have loads of deer around us, i hope it lives, but if not i hope it doesnt suffer.
if its not better at all tomorrow i shall take it to vets and tell them to help it, even if i have to pay.
    will keep you updated,
im not an rspca lover( sspca up ere) but if it is in a really bad state at least they will put it to sleep.

  • Shame on the vet

They should have been able to give you details of a local Wildlife Rescue; could you try ringing another veterinary practice (large animal) and asking if they know of anyone locally? Or at the very least, you need to get the details of someone who can come and (if s/he declines....) humanely destroy the poor creature (local Hunt kennel?).

PS - most vets treat wildlife willingly and for free in my experience.

This is horrible! I would phone the RSPCA to see if they can come and put it down/take it away.

Not quite the same, but we had a stray cat come into our house that was dying, and the RSPCA came to collect it. It's really sad though when you know there's nothing you can do.

Hope that link works and they should be of some help number is 0300 1234 999

    or it also says
    1. Report any collisions to the police. They should have a list of contacts avaliable to deal with injured deer at the road side.
i know you didn't hit it but they maybe able to give you a contact list?

thanks for all help so far,
i know what i said bout not liking rspca isnt totally fair, as alot of the workers i have no doubt go way above the call of duty,
will see how it is tomorrow,
hope the blood loss from back end isnt major, it may be youngish, has buds on its head, bl..dy heavy to lug in and out of boot etc,
i know vets dont have them at surgery as they wont thrive there, with smells etc, i just dont think they did enough for an animal that must be in deep shock, and pain? id have preferred for them to have given pain killers, cant stand the though of it lying in pain,
it is awful when theres nothing more you can do,
    am glad theres this forum,

I dont know what area you are in ,but in the Bucks area there is St Tiggywinkles animal hospital,my friend also runs a wildlife hospital in the Bucks area, just spoke to my friend she said it needs to be on a drip needs fluid ,it needs to be kept warm and NEEDS TO SEE A VET.
  • If it gets to it's feet, that will be more than half the battle. The blood could be a small tear or a significant internal bleed, it's so hard to know. As it's suffering from shock, it could look worse than it is but any prey animal will try to stand/escape as soon as possible. I hope so much that all legs are intact and then would think that releasing it near where you found it (for it's herd) would be the best plan. Hope all is well tonight.
