I'd agree that the Education Store does get abused and I'd have thought if anything could motivate Apple to change the way it's accessed, or clarify who exactly can order from there, then this would be it.
The main Edu site is an odd one- its just sort of *there* and anyone can access it. It seems up to the consumers conscience, or interpretation of the term "education" (or the t&cs- but no one ever reads those;)) whether to actually order anything or not. Nine times out of ten Apple dont check so people risk it. And why not.
How they limit access & make sure items purchased are for people in education *only* (even if the item was bought by, for example, the students parents) I dont know. I don't quite see how they can. It's a complicated situation for Apple to sort out as there's so many variables. I'm glad all I have to do is muse about it
Btw: The HE site (with the greatest discounts) is accessible from University servers only. I'm with the OU. I have neither an Athens account, a University Server, or an NUS card yet afaik (I haven't actually tried yet) I qualify for the HE discount like a normal Uni student but would have to ring orders through for that.0 -

If you've never accessed through a university server how do you know there's a different set of prices on that site Tom? I just clicked on the 3rd button, I expect most people did too.desrever sthgir lla0 -
If you think Apple's education store is unguarded you should try o2's! https://www.o2.co.uk/nus
Anyone can order anything from there and save about 25% on the normal cost (some items, like sim cards are actually 90% cheaper )

you would be able to have an athens account if you ask your tutor or something at the OU - athens is needed to give access to academic journals.. All proper uni students will have athens access on request - most students will have it attached to their uni computer accounts..
I know this is what macromedia and some other education discount things use.. it makes sense.0 -

I went through our server and have not had anything other than the confirmation email or money taken from my account.0 -

I'd heard rumours so I googled
Linky
I ordered online using the normal Education link too. Seemed too much like hard work picking up the phone.0 -
I'm off to Paris early tomorrow so I will have to give Apple another ring in the morning to find out what the situation is because I've still to get the email they promised me.I also won't be back in the country for a few days so don't want to miss out on anything!! The lady I spoke to last seemed to think I was getting one though so I am fairly positive. <yes I am a full time student before you grumble>.0

Thanks- i've not been on the course long and am still trying to find my way round. I'll have a look for the Athens thing!
It would make sense (to use Athens) but then there's still the matter of all the non HE students who are equally eligible. Like I said, seems complicated0 -
if you got to the open university library site next time you sign on you will see that your student number can be used as your athens login ..the instructions are all there....
as for the person that stated that the dinner lady didnt qualify ..im afraid i disagree totally ....not all 'valuable' teaching that goes on in schools nowadays is purely down to teaching staff.... support staff play an equally valuable part.....
how many primary schools rely on the good old jannie to take the boys football team etc etc etc ....
as i already stated , i think apple will have a very hard task if they take the route of trying to disqualify people for not meeting the criteria since at the end of the day im sure most people not working in the eductaion sector or not presently engaged in studies will know someone that is.
given that fact its problably a straight case for apple of either they honour all or no orders , the exception being those who made multiple orders.
cheers0 -
It's well worth getting an Athens username/pass Tom; I use some of the features often for viewing & downloading British Standards and also to look things up on Lexis Nexisdesrever sthgir lla0
