The way I'd imagine it would work- if the orders are honoured- was you'd have to be *in* education to receive the order. Ie: the Name/CC Billing Address/Shipping Address would have to tally with the details of the person who qualifies for the Education discount.

I'm not sure whether simply "knowing" someone in education will cut it. It'll be nice to find out for certain!

Hello to all at MSE btw. I've popped across from DVDf :)

At first I thought bargain of the year, but I'm now begining to have my doubts anyway. Yes a tremendous price for such a good camera, but I didn't really anticipate the cost of the extras.

Sure I knew I'd be lucky to get a lens for under £200 but I didn't expect lenses to start from £359 for a fixed lense and if you want a reasonable lens (one with any range) they start from £450 and go up and up and up see http://www.jessops.com/ where the top lens they sell is over £5000.

Not quite the purchase I had in mind when I thought at last a cheap slr to replace my compact.

Why buy the brand named lens/flashes? jessops etc also sell flashes from about £11 and cheaper lenses.
for a total of £150 you have a bloody good camera worth at three times that.

At random from those who can provide genuine student ID that tallies up with the details provided when ordering, maybe?

Yes, not just random, that would be entirely unfair.

Taken from the 'declaration' when entering the Apple education store:

    Can I Purchase?
By clicking “I accept” below, I confirm that I am:
    • aged 18 or over
    • a student with a valid student card or a teacher, lecturer, tutor or other supervisor of students at a UK education establishment
    • I agree to Apple contacting me to check my status. I will provide proof of my status upon request and I agree Apple can refuse my order if I do not provide proof which is satisfactory for Apple. Apple’s decision will be final.

Nothing there in terms of buying on behalf of a student or teacher/lecturer. So if any cameras are available, I feel they should only be dispatched to those who fulfil the above criteria.

Part of their t&c's were that you were a member of an educational institution so think that 90% of the orders made were not purchased by such people.

if i were them, even though it is clearly a price error, i would only ship to those few who are the bill payer AND a student/teacher ie only ship the camera to people who fax/email their id and pay with their own credit card and only ship to their billing address, which will mitigate their losses.

even though they have already charged peoples cards they are well within their rights to put a refund back on if you have breached their t&c's of not being a student.

Agreed. However, the whole charging peoples cards thing is annoying for me being a student. I've just whipped out under £100 to buy a camera. They withdrew the money out of my account as soon as i made my order (29th). I have had no emails to explain why the item has not been shipped yet even though i was given a dispatch date of the 30th December. It is now the 2nd Jan, no contact from Apple and no dispatch confirmation either, mistake or no mistake in pricing, their customer services is severely lacking quality.

I know we have had several bank holidays (so supposedly, only a few people work) however, i ordered some headphones for my Ipod on the education site on the same day i order the camera and received a phone call the next day from them asking for me to prove my university status - so their is no excuse for them not being in touch due to the bank holidays.

I am now out of pocket, cant afford to buy another camera now because Apple are still holding my money. Probably will miss the sales now!

What about those of us who bought for a student whose card is maxed out?
Not every student would have used their own card.

What do they require for proof of student status?

I am a student and used my university account as the contact address -I wonder if that's enough IF they do decide to honour genuine single item orders.

I still think that it'll be refunds all round though - but here's hoping!!

Well, in buying from the education store, you have to declare that you yourself are a student...

In terms of ID - I expect a scan of a student ID card would be sufficient.
