Halifax Faster payments (Not Working)

  • I sent two payments from A&L a couple of days ago, the 1st one was credited to the destination account instantly, the 2nd one was sent by 3-day transfer. Contacted A&L, they told me they are still testing FPS till next year, so FPS is not guaranteed each time. Might be the same with other banks ....

It looks to be Halifax that gets my chocolate teapot award. I even tried phone banking and talking to someone. They tried FP and it wouldn't work for them either. It's not working today either. Hopeless!

Also, I wonder if a complaint is in order. Seems to me that FP has been turned off and yet customers have NOT been told this. It just keeps saying it couldn't do it at this time. From my experience over the last 2 days it has not worked at all. My last successful FP was 17/11/08 and even that took a few tries, initially wouldn't then later would. Halifax on the phone told me that FP success or fail was random (really reassuring that!).

I think some Nationwide accounts accept faster payments, but only a small minority. For a founder member in the scheme they are being very slow. One reason might be that when they do introduce it people will keep less money in Nationwide e-savings accounts as the instant transfer facility won't be much of an advantage anymore.

All FlexAccounts available to "normal" customers are on sort code 07-01-16, which does not accept faster payments. There is also sort code 07-02-46, but I've never heard of anyone having this - although it does accept faster payments according to the sort code checker.

Some customers, like myself, have FlexAccounts with the sort code 07-44-56 which again can't accept faster payments :(

Humm... I thought all FlexAccounts on 07-44-56 were moved to 07-01-16 a few years back. Have they started recycling 07-44-56 for new accounts so they now have double the namespace?

My account was opened in early 2006. The statements and new card still say 07-44-56 although someone in the branch said that if I use 07-01-16 then the payment will still reach me :?
  • The Halifax Online Helpdesk sent me this info on 24/10/08 which might be of interest.
In response to your query I can confirm that from 9th October customers could start sending Immediate Faster Payments from Halifax and Bank of Scotland enabled bank accounts up to the value of £1. This initial limit was set to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
From 14th October customers were able to send an Immediate Faster Payment of up to £20.
From 24th October customers were able to send an Immediate Faster Payment of up to £100.
From 30th October customers will be able to send an Immediate Faster Payment of up to £500.
We will continue to review this limit until, eventually, the upper limit of £10,000 is reached.

Never mind faster pay, at the time of writing this their Online Banking isn't even working.

Just a thought on Faster Pay at Halifax, if they did implement the system in it's full blown capacity, they would certainly help any run on the bank...;)
