domestic violence

If he pleads guilty or is found guilty then the Court (as AF has said) will order a Pre-Sentence Report, probably to include IDAP assessment (because it's not automatic that he'll be suitable for it). Anyway, one of the first things the PSR author does in a DV case is contact the local DV unit with the details and they will say how many times there's been a call out to that family. So for instance you can get 20 call outs, none of which led to prosecution, but that will go in the report so the Court will be aware of it. Defence solicitors hate it . .
You'd be amazed how many defendants will say "I've never done anything like this before" when a quick call to the DV unit paints a very different picture . I'm sure they think we're still in the days when various agencies didn't communicate too well.
 Jxx
I also think there is a course now that defendant's when sentenced for DV matters can be ordered to attend. Can't remember what it's called for this second, but it's a type of domestic violence awareness program0

ooh another point about the IDAP and probation is that if he was to have a new partner he must notify them and they will tell his new partner that he has been convicted of DV failure to do so will put him back in court. shame its only while they are on probation and doing the course though as i think this is quite a good thing.
i also read about the dv courts etc in brighton and thought what a fab idea!!It only seems kinky the first time.. :A0

and in reponse to what someone said about it being to serious for magistrates courts...i really dont think it will , 94% of DV cases are dealt with in the magistrates courts and figures show that sentences passed in domestic cases are disproportionately more lenient than non domestic cases i just hope for your sake he gets what he deserves i just hope for your sake he gets what he deserves
as for the client thing unfortunatly you cannot prove this is the reason the clients have cancelled but financial violence does come under the term domesti violence [ womensaid.org]
I know its easy to say but dont be embarressed you should be proud of yourself, proud that you did probably the most terrorfying thing by calling the police on someone you love...that took alot of courage and i hope that courage stays within you for the whole trial

Are you referring to IDAP courses? If so, I don't have any direct experience but have looked for information. Generally research shows them to be effective roughly for one to two thirds of men. The research varies greatly. Also, in the UK, it is still a relatively new approach, and thus, it is hard to evaluate. I asked the manager of my local probation if it works, and he shrugged and said sometimes but research is still ongoing and he couldn't give me figures as yet.
I am however sceptical. Many men will never change and in some cases I think it gives the men the 'language of therapy' and they find new ways to control women. Mostly, they do the course because they have to as part of their sentence. If your ex does do this, you will be contacted by a Women's Safety Officer for your input, and to to ensure your safety.
Of course, it is in your ex's interest to attend AA and to effect a reconciliation and forgiveness when it comes to sentencing. These factors are taken into account so I would be very wary of his sincerity and motives.
A big well done to you, it does get easier over time, and thanks to others on this thread for such informative posts.
 Regards
