Thanks Lunar-just to reiterate, he was living in third world, borrowed the cash to buy a car as he had split with his wife. Promised to pay back when he got some sort of settlement he was waiting on from ex wife.Settlement came, by this time he had new place to live which was constantly being burgled so the cash went to pay for security. He moved back to the UK so said he would pay when he had amassed some cash. Met a new lady, you guessed it, she got pregnant so they needed money to set up new house/new baby etc. Couple of years down the line he has 2 more kids, marriage breaks down again and he lost his job all in a short space of time. After a few months jobless he got a new job abroad-which is where we are now! And for the last time- NO, he hasn't paid my husband back on the QT !!!!! We don't have secrets like that thanks!Debt-free...and staying that way...0

I find it amazing that some people are thinking this bloke isn't in the wrong! £6000 is a LOT of money and the OP shouldn't have to ask for it back, he should do the decent thing and pay it back. It should never have gotten this far that he's possibly forgotten about it anyway. Which is a bit daft to think that anybody could forget they'd borrowed £6k off somebody!
If anybody is being a bad friend, it's the bloke who borrowed the money and didn't bother paying it back.
OP - Good luck
 Think happy & you'll be happy

Nice you are in a position to allow £6k to be given away.
Sadly, I'm not...And that's precisely why I'd ask for the cash back at some point, not just leave it years then threaten legal action out of the blue, as per your suggestion.
I agree that you shouldn't really have to ask, but not everyone sees debt in the same way, so you can't fly off the handle at someone for not paying back money that they might not think you need that urgently, especially when, as the OP points out, the guy *has* been through an "eventful" few years.
Not meant as a criticism of you in any way, OP, sorry if you read it like that.0 -
flippin heck how can anyone forget they've casually borrowed 6K jeppers nelly I would die if i knew i owed that much and especially to a mate CHRIST! To right you shouldn't have to ask for it back but it's come to that and bloody rights you should have the money back even if it does come to asking for it back, some peeps are to bloody kind in this world and you sound like one of the few (not ment nastily) I really do hope you get it back tho!!0

I think everyone is on your side schoolrunmum but some people are trying to play devils advocate. I agree that it would be hard to forget a debt of 6k but it is hard to imagine that someone could be so cheeky as to not even attempt to pay it back and then speak about his wife buying a horse!
The main thing now is that you have emailed him and asked him what the situation is. i think this is a step in the right direction and with any luck he will respond and start paying it back soon.
On a lighter note, any idea what you would like to do with the money, or will you put it in savings?Total (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947

£6k for a car?
Surely he could have picked up a much cheaper one...
Well done on asking for the money-I think people are just astonished that you've waited this long to get the nerve up to ask! I know I would have asked a lot sooner.
I hope it turns out ok.Empty pockets never held anyone back, only empty heads and empty hearts can do that -Peale0 -

People can talk themselves into anything and 'adjust' their memories of an event. He may have persuaded himself into thinking of it as a 'gift' by this point. Which would need a sharp correction!0

Well thanks all for your support. I haven't had a response from him as yet, but will keep you all posted...and we only let it go on this long because he was having such a rough time personally....Debt-free...and staying that way...0
