Hi schoolrunmum, I have read your thread with interest, have you had any reply from your husbands friend yet? I wondered if they had even sent you a Christmas card or made any sort of contact. I hope you get it back, I don't think I know anyone who can afford to be £6k out of pocket, especially in the current financial climate!!0

Hi,
Just noticed schoolrunmum's name on another thread, so thought I'd see if there were any updates to this? No response from the friend, I assume?
Did you tell your husband you had asked the question?

I'm not averse to lending a mate a tenner if they ask, but I would never ever EVER lend that kind of money to a friend or family member, FULL STOP after a recent eye opener.
My mum came into some money a couple of years ago and I've just found out that soon after, the rest of the family where around her like locusts.
She called me a couple of weeks ago, in tears because she's struggling a little bit, and despite asking the 'family' members for the money back (about £1,300 in total), none of them made any efforts to pay. I had to drive 130 miles and 'visit' each one of them in turn (being 6 foot 4 and 19 stone helps a bit) and pull the money out of them
I know this is nohelp to the OP and a little off topic, but it staggers me how so-called 'friends' and in my case family can act this way. I sincerely hope your 'friend' stumps up the cash...0 -
I'm afraid I agree with Grey Pilgrim, I just don't lend money to friends anymore apart from three who I know will absolutely pay me back. It's just not worth the risk.
You need to talk to your husband, he is a soft-touch (and I mean that in the nicest possible way! My boyfriend is generous to a fault as well and he gets taken advantage of). It's not his responsibility to fund his friends and pay their debts just because he managed to build a good life for himself. They could have done the same if they'd worked at it too.
There is little the law can do as you don't seem to have any paperwork signed when you lent the money. And without that, it's your word against his.
However, it may be worth trying to track him down. Try ex-pat associations in the Middle East (I'm assuming he's somewhere like Dubai?), even try a good google session - things like Facebook have a mine of information on them. It won't be impossible to find him. Ask mutual friends, maybe it's even worth hiring a private detective or something like that, I'm not sure how much these things cost. But getting a phone number isn't going to be impossible. And then start hounding him. Threaten court if you have to.
And don't lend sums like this to "friends" again!0 -
Sorry schoolrunmum, didn't post on this to get you nagged again LOL, was just interested!

Hi schoolrunmum
Just to say I hope you got your money back - or at least some acknowledgement, there's nothing worse than being ignored... except possibly being ignored by someone who owes you that much money!
I had a Light Bulb Moment last year about lending friends money and have decided never to do it again, I think it has lost me a couple of friends over the years, who never paid me back and took to avoiding me when they felt guilty (or just didn't want to pay me back
).
Anyway good luck, hope you get it sorted out!

Honestly, there was no nagging intended there at all, just complete sympathy for the OP and the wish that the fleas of a thousand camel infest the armpits of the 'friend' in question.
Amen to that! :rotfl:
