While a faulty meter is a possibility, there are more likely explanations. To start with, are you converting your meter units to kwh correctly? You can get a reasonable estimate by multiplying by 11 for a metric meter or by 31 for an imperial meter.

    Magentasue,

I am confident that I have converted units to kwh correctly -it is metric and I have used 11kwh (For simplicity and have rechecked last bills to ensure calculation is right conversion factor is actually 11.17kwh per unit -however now they will probably change the calorific factor again funny how it goes up for winter bills)

We have thick curtains but they are full length so cover the rads. Would I be better off cutting them

    Question.
When you draw the curtains, can you feel enough heat from the rads?

    Question.
When the rads are behind the curtains, does their thermostat switch them off?

Have a think about it, and do what you think is best.

    Have a nice one,

    Space Rider,

This is what I have previously used. Its does seem that I'm using much less Gas than you in a property built in 1935 comapred with your new build. Must be down to having a better boiler/system. Unless anyone has any more ideas why I'm using less.

    88kWh a day for

    Heating on 24hours @ 21deg - 10 radiators all doubles.

Outside day temp 6deg Night temp 2deg.

We are 3 bed pre war semi
    2 lots of loft insulation
    Cavity wall insulation
    All double glazed
I also cook with gas oven and hob and gas shower
A rated boiler - I think its 95% efficient something like that

I have 14 rads but I don`t have the stat any higher than 18 when it`s on all night.

All my rads are quite large. The only place that wont hold its heat is the conservatory. I have 3 doubles in there, and its all open plan to the back of the house.
I'm actually quite impressed with how efficient this new system is compare to other posts I seem to be faring better.
I also cook with gas hob and oven and we have a gas shower.

    Are yours electric?

You have said that you live in a large four bedroomed house.

We have downsized to cut our living costs - you are paying for the privilege of having all that space that we gave up!

Fair point but I've looked at my usage over the summer months (heating off) and was still averaging 40kwh per day. Seems a lot just for hot water and hob.
  • Hi all, came across this thread as I was investigating if it was worth replacing my 16 year old boiler.

Gas, averaged through the year, is 35.9kwh/day.
Gas is used for heating and cooking. I'm with Atlantic, pay £36/m. Tho they refund a whole month for being loyal!
I have the heating on all the time, set to 20C 5.30-7.30am and 5.00-10.30pm and 13.5C at all other times. I've found this to be cheaper than switching off completely (unless I'm away and even then in winter it's set to 5C to prevent frost). I may raise this to 15 C - is that advisable?

House is 1993 3-bed detached, one adult (me) with cav walls and loft insulation about 10" deep. Am also going to add TRVs as it feels too hot upstairs even at 20C downstairs. Also, I don't mind wearing jumpers and thick socks and I have a duck down duvet. I think people all too often forget about personal insulation!

    Cheers folks, interesting thread.

I also use immersion for hot water

    Why?..............

I had an extension afew years ago moved my boiler and extended pipes to hot water tank to at least 60' flow and return 22mm gravity fed this I believe was a mistake and causes me to use (in summer) about 1 unit per day just to heat my hot water enough for a family of 6 (then).
I decided to down size my hot water tank from 140L to 117L and fit an immersion (just about 100% efficient) switched my gch off and use the immersion the whole of the summer. This actualy gave me hot water when I needed it and seemed to be a few pence/day cheaper (10/20p) although if everybody was having baths it might not be. Also Iam only using the gas boiler for the winter thus hopefully last longer.
Because its a smaller hot water tank I need to rapidly heat the water back up and also I can turn the boiler water down to No.2 which I could never do without the immersion as the hot water would be to cold and still have enough heat in the house at the moment.
Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves

Agreed. We averaged 26kwh a day in the summer. Hot water for six (we are economical here) and gas oven and hob.

I personally wouldn`t swap a boiler just because it`s getting old. If you`re happy with the amount of gas you`re consuming and the boiler is working ok then I would leave it as it is. My average over last year was 46kwh/day. I did set out to reduce that this year but I hate being cold and 18c is not warm enough for me. One thing I have done is to only have the hot water on for half an hour in morning and same in the evening.

I found the bills for my old house where the boiler was at the time 6 years old back in 2003. I was on a career break at the time so the heating was never turned off over the winter. All the rads had TRV`s but there was only 7 of them. The house was a 3 bedroom town house and I used 18498 against the 16834 used in this house. Major difference was the kwh which was 1.25 at the time with standing charge of around £9.50. I`m now paying between 3.63 and 2.45.
