The tier 1 rate is on the first 125kWh per quarter or on 500kWh per annum. The average user consumes 20,000kWh per annum, therefore 97.5% is charged at the cheaper tier 2 rate.

Please explain why you think that your calculations should be done using the tier 1 rate?

Its 4572kWh not 500kWh per annum at the higher rate so over 25% is charged at the higher rate.

No. It's about what we used this summer (six of us in 3 bed mid terrace). Our gas now is around 80kwh a day now, with the heating on.

Tier1 gas on click6 is the first 670kwh per quarter - in fact when you look at your bill they actually charge you a tier 1 rate per day (670kwh / by no of billing days - not just on the first 670kwh used).

My reasoning was to simply try and establish of my meter is overcharging by racking up units faster than it should - So I was simply saying if everything else is off the 2 pilot lights would cost me £10 pm or £120p/a.

Having looked at the other replies my point being I only have the boiler on for around 4 hrs a day and it still racks up around 7units (metric)or 77kwh - using the combined tier1 per day costs and the balance at tier 2 this is 44p per unit - so £3.08 per day and over 90 days (quarter = £270).

The other reply on 5 bed property had the heating on for around 7hrs per day and using around the same units as I do for 4 hrs??

Hence my concern is my meter overreading and how easy is it to get to checked without racking up more costs.

    Thanks to all who responded

In theory, an hour in the morning and five hours evening. That does get overridden though. We do like it warm and three bedrooms are carpet and curtain-less with the sash windows just pinned in while we decorate. Hopefully, that'll all be finished next week and we will notice a difference.

I've been looking into this since the end of summer- obviously gas prices vary, however I am using the guide price of 44p to have the ch on for 1 hour. now there are many variable to take into consideration-
temperature of home to begin with
    desired temp to be reached
    price you pay for gas
also calorific value of the gas depending on where you live, apparently (and I didn't realise this) some gas is "stronger" than others, a bit like the octane rating on petrol- more bang for your buck !
Since aug 23 to 23 nov I have used 67 units of gas. when it was still summer and no heating on I was using 3.5 units per week. now with the heating on I am averaging 6 units a week. I have 5 radiators on for approx 4 hours a day, 40 mins in the am and the rest in the eve when home from work.
Now I got the price of 44p per hour from a government website- I am sorry I cant remeber which one or I would have posted. I would also recomend that you join the i-measure website and put your utility metre reading in weekly to see your usage and to get a rough calculation of the cost, it will look someting like this-
    Last week you spent:
    • £8.79 on gas
    • £8.28 on electricity
Total you have spent on energy since starting imeasure (13 weeks ago):
    • £73.52 on gas
    • £104.04 on electricity
    I hope this helps.
  • Ive not read all 12 pages, just 1 and 11/12, seems the thread has gone more qualitative than quantitative as time goes on, so thought I would ask a question.

    Situation :

Mid terrace, pre1930 build, from what I can see no insulation apart from the paint on the walls and new double glazing throughout. Thinks theres very little in the loft. New combiboiler / GCH system, all rads fitted with TRV's. Wireless CH controller. Gas used for instant hot water for all taps, electric cooking etc

    Gas usage 29/05 - 04/09 : 29 units / 918kwh = 9.3 per day
Heating was used probly twice in this period
    04/09 - 26/11 : 37 units / 1184kwh = 14.26 per day
Heating is on every day, usually set to 18C when we want it, which is 4pm - 9pm/10pm every night.

We are a young couple, g/f works full time and I am at uni.

Is this usage appropriate or is it likely I could reduce it anymore?

    Dan

I use 9 units per day on the days when the heating is on from 7am to 10.30 pm. I live in new build house and have TRV on the bedroom rads and the room stat is set at 21. On a work day then I tend to use 6 units per day. When it`s been really cold and the heating has been left on 24 hours it`s worked out at 11 units.

I stand corrected, what an expensive tariff, why do people pay so much? Their click 6 electricity tariff may be cheap for most but their gas certainly isn't!
