I am very upset with Npower who have put me into debt for the first time ever.We moved over from staywarm 18 months ago when their prices nearly doubled. I have been paying my power bills monthly for nearly 40 years so that the cost has been evenly spread throughout the year and this has always worked perfectly until I joined Npower.....I t was decided that I would pay £30 pm aftr 2 months Npower changed it to £17 pm which I did'nt notice straight a way, when I did I telephoned and asked them to increase the direct debit. they then sent me a bill for £285 and increased the dd to £75pm which i have paid for 3 months . New bill arrived dd now £91pm, phoned with meter reading and got ammende bill dd now £107 pm!!! this is for gas only, we are a retired couple on government pensions and have a 3 bed detached bungalow and a 33 year old boiler. I want to pay my bills in 12 eaqual instalments but this seems to impossible with Npower. any ideas? time for a change perhaps...regards...bri

Its very hard to help without knowing how much you are using. Can you tell us how many Kwh you have been using per day in Winter and in Summer.

Hi, about 22kw summer and 44kw per day just now... must admit we were spoilt with staywarm as we were able to use all the power we needed at a fixed price, but their prices went up long before the oil....... It was a social scheme that became too popular and so the new owners changed the rules.....bri

I think the little things really help - keeping doors closed - if airing a room - keep the door closed throughout.

We only have two doors downstairs, one from into the entrance hall into the lounge and one from the kitchen into the utility room. We are thinking about hanging some doors to close off the archway between the lounge and dining room. We also have sliding patio doors leading from the dining room into the conservatory. We did toy with the idea of some oil filled rads but have sine just decided to keep the conservatory out of bounds during the cold months.

Im not sure but with my combi we have it on economy mode so it can take a few seconds for the hot water to come out - if it isnt on this isnt it keeping an amount hot at all times? Couls be wrong if i am ill swop mine over too!!

Checked it out briefly and couldn’t see an economy mode. It can take over a minute for hot water to come out, especially in the extended part of the house.

Close your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat in

Not a problem when closing them over the patio doors but we have full length curtains in the bedrooms. Great for keeping the rooms dark but they tend to trap the heat. I think we’ll have to change to half length.

If running baths try not to overfill

My house is a similar size and also open plan and im using about a third of your useage

we change the temp daily dependent upon how we feel but roughly

    8-5 - 18-19%
    5-10.30 - 20-21%
    10.30-8 - 16%

Its a 1 yr old combi - new loft insulation and cavity wall just done

Any idea how much the cavity wall has helped reduce consumption?

I really couldnt live in temperatures as high as that

Do you not get headaches with such heat? I cant believe you need a temperature of 22 degrees overnight

It's made me wonder how many folks leave their heating on overnight?

  • During our last billing period, early Aug - early Nov we used 6 kwh gas a day.
    Gas hob
    Hot water
Heating for a 4 bed house (heating very seldom on but we did start to use it a little from the end of Oct)
Family of 4, someone in the house most of the day

I like a warm house, but the heating goes of half hour or more before we go up and the electric blanket goes on. Wouldn't bother me if the bedrooms were heated but can't justify cost and OH would complain about it being too hot.

Hi everyone new to this forum, this is my first post!!
My daily usage at the moment is 33kw a day,
Thats water on for just one hour, heating on 18 from approx 16.00- 22.30,having said that it doesn't stay on constantly and feels quite chilly at times, gas cooking,on for maybe an hour a day,but some times, not at all!!
I'm to frightened to put the heating on much during the day, even though some days im at home, for fear of the huge bill coming through the door in feb!!
My hubby says it works out cheaper to do this in the long run,but im not so sure, any advice would be most greatfull, thanks, maz:hello:.

I think you're right. But it might cost less than you think to put the heating on for half hour or so to warm the house up a couple of times a day. When it comes on in the evening, the house won't be heating up from cold so you'll save a bit there. All depends on insulation. Definitely worth doing a bit of meter watching and working out how much it costs. Some days it's worth it!

Hiya thanks for the quick reply,we have recently just had better loft insulation,as for any other insulation im not sure,i don't think there is any,we live in a housing !!! property and have been here for 16 years, the main problem with our house is,we have the stairs in the living room,so a lot of heat escapes up the stairs.
Also may sound thick, but do you use more gas, when it is colder outside?because last week,i had the heating on at the same time, and was only using approx 22kw per day!!thanks again, maz.
