  • I think we all have to be careful not to get too hung about using less fuel by spending mega bucks on energy saving measures. My mate has recently had a combi boiler installed at a cost of £2,000+. Fine, great idea, that should save £100+ per year. Only problem being his 'old' boiler was only 5 years old and functioning perfectly well! To me, whilst I accept he's using less gas/paying lower bills, what's the point of spending £2,000+ on this when there was no urgent need?

I agree thats the reason I have decided to keep my old fridge freezer. It would take me 3 years in savings before I had broke even.
I must admit though I did change the gch system in my house when we bought it. It was working perfectly well but the radiators were old fashioned and painted, and it had a back boiler with a hideous fire.
I did look at keeping the boiler but because all the fires that went with back boilers were awful, we changed it.

We've installed new CH in this house and the last because there was none in either. We have fairly new white goods too. None have been replaced before the old ones died, but we did go for energy efficiency when we replaced them which meant buying new rather than considering second-hand.
  • Gas usage last week 111kWh. I know it wasnt very cold but I'm really pleased.

Looking through my bills for the last 8 years, I seem to average roughly 11kWh per day in the summer and around 42kWh per day in the winter.

Actually I was mistaken, mine go back to 1996. I started making a spreadsheet of my usage back then, and have continued to do so ever since!

You must have electric heating/cooking/hot water?
  • I use 3-4 kWh/day in the summer May-August rising to 12 kWh/day between Dec-Feb. I have GCH and Gas HW. I have the windows open all day and all night all year round in sunny Edinburgh. I close them in the evening when I'm sitting in the house and use the heat from cooking in the kitchen (Electric) to warm the flat for the rest of the evening. If it does get too cold then I use the 1 hour button on the programmer and the place is warm all night. The water is only ever controlled in the same way, when I need it I put it on for an hour and that's it for at least the whole day. Does me fine and my gas bill was around £7/month last time I bothered to check it. I guess I've just got used to living at lower temperatures plus sitting around with these on certainly helps:
