I do think that having my wife and two littluns at home during the day, and then 5 of us evenings and weekends affects our use substantially. There is no way I would want them to be cold (and my wife really feels the cold), so when its as cold as now we tend to run the heating at 23 - 24 degrees during the day and maybe 21 -22 at night. It's a four bed semi with a Bosch Greenstar Junior 28i combi for heating and hot water. We've 12 radiators, most of which have thermostats.

We use about 700 kwh of gas per week and 125 kwh of electricity at the moment. Imeasure say that last week we spent £24.82 on gas and £15.36 on electricity using their rates for calculation.

Because we are with npower and their price sculpting, the savings to be gained by cutting usage at this time of year are not proportional. We're using about 3033 kwh of gas per month which would cost £109.70. If we cut our use by 50% say to 1517 that would still cost £77.20, which is a saving of less than 30%. And to make that kind of reduction in use would be extremely challenging and painful. I think that the npower price sculpting suits high gas consumers like us as the non-primary rate is cheap and we use a lot of it which reduces our average rate quite dramatically.

I really couldnt live in temperatures as high as that

Do you not get headaches with such heat? I cant believe you need a temperature of 22 degrees overnight

We moved house at the start of June. It is a large 4 bed detached originally built in 1974 and extended some 20 years ago. It is fully open plan on the ground floor with a lounge, open arch to dining room and another open arch to the kitchen.

The Worcester gas combi boiler located in the garage is approximately 3 years old and provides instant hot water 24/7.

There used to be a programmer which the central heating could be set to come on at 3 different periods during the day and all rads have individual TRV’s.

We noticed some of the TRV’s weren’t working as the rads were on full regardless of the setting. We then decided to make some improvements by:

    1) Installing a wireless room thermostat in the hallway to control the heating.
    2) Replacing faulty TRV’s
    3) Replacing one inefficient rad upstairs and installing an extra rad downstairs. (Total 10 rads + 3 heated towel rail rads in each of the bathrooms.

We had a quote for cavity wall insulation but it was £400 so we didn’t have it done. The same guy said our loft insulation was adequate for now.

There are 2 adults, a 10yr old and a 2 year old. Mum and toddler at home during the week. Both adults shower every morning and we all have a bath at night (shared bath water). Gas hob also used for cooking.

    Heating is set as follows:

    Setting 1: 06.30 20C
    Setting 2: 08.30 19C
    Setting 3: 16.30 21C
    Setting 4: 18.30 22C
    Setting 5: 22.30 7C

As it was cold at the weekend I noticed the heating was coming on quite often during the day causing our average consumption to hit 150kwh per day !!!

Is there any way of reducing this? As you can see the temp is not set excessively high and I’d imagine the consumption will continue to rise as the outside temperature falls in the coming winter months. Also is there any way I can work out how much gas each rad uses or the hob etc.?

    Many thanks

Can you show how you have worked this out? 150kWh per day gas consumption?

  • I think the little things really help - keeping doors closed - if airing a room - keep the door closed throughout.

Im not sure but with my combi we have it on economy mode so it can take a few seconds for the hot water to come out - if it isnt on this isnt it keeping an amount hot at all times? Couls be wrong if i am ill swop mine over too!!

Close your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat in

If running baths try not to overfill

My house is a similar size and also open plan and im using about a third of your useage

we change the temp daily dependent upon how we feel but roughly

    8-5 - 18-19%
    5-10.30 - 20-21%
    10.30-8 - 16%

Its a 1 yr old combi - new loft insulation and cavity wall just done

I would get the cavity wall insulation done ASAP then! It's not even very cold yet.

How much do you think it could cut usage by?

Difficult to say but all new builds have had to have it for many years now. It sounds to me like your are losing a lot of heat but all properties are obviously different. I have always had cavity wall so it's difficult to comment with actual % figures etc, perhaps someone else can?

Our previous property a 3 bed detached (Built 1999) had cavity wall insulation and we were averaging 22000kwh per annum then. I still have the usage details so I will do some number crunching and compare.

We had a guy come round he did a survey and said it would be £199 for cavity wall insulation under our local council's scheme. When we phoned him to say please can you go ahaead he then said he had to come back and measure, the price then doubled.

I am very upset with Npower who have put me into debt for the first time ever.We moved over from staywarm 18 months ago when their prices nearly doubled. I have been paying my power bills monthly for nearly 40 years so that the cost has been evenly spread throughout the year and this has always worked perfectly until I joined Npower.....I t was decided that I would pay £30 pm aftr 2 months Npower changed it to £17 pm which I did'nt notice straight a way, when I did I telephoned and asked them to increase the direct debit. they then sent me a bill for £285 and increased the dd to £75pm which i have paid for 3 months . New bill arrived dd now £91pm, phoned with meter reading and got ammende bill dd now £107 pm!!! this is for gas only, we are a retired couple on government pensions and have a 3 bed detached bungalow and a 33 year old boiler. I want to pay my bills in 12 eaqual instalments but this seems to impossible with Npower. any ideas? time for a change perhaps...regards...bri
