Difficult to say but all new builds have had to have it for many years now. It sounds to me like your are losing a lot of heat but all properties are obviously different. I have always had cavity wall so it's difficult to comment with actual % figures etc, perhaps someone else can?

Our previous property a 3 bed detached (Built 1999) had cavity wall insulation and we were averaging 22000kwh per annum then. I still have the usage details so I will do some number crunching and compare.

We had a guy come round he did a survey and said it would be £199 for cavity wall insulation under our local council's scheme. When we phoned him to say please can you go ahaead he then said he had to come back and measure, the price then doubled.

Finally decided to pay the extra and get it done before winter sets in. Went via energytrust this time so had a different contractor round to do a survey and give us a quote.

Good news he will only charge £200 all in.

Bad news is we've already had it done

Fair play to him for not trying to fleece us like the first company did. But I really though I was going to be able to lower the 28,000kwh per annum current usage by having it done.
  • Used 16 gas units a day this weekend  - been in the house so on all day. No thermostat so just on full bore when its on lol - will sort it out next weekend

    20 Jun - 23 Sep - 29 metric units costing £20.34 (102? days so 0.28 units a day = 3kwh ish)

    23 Sep - 29 Nov - 42 metric units so far £??.?? (67? days so 0.63 units a day = 7kwh ish)

But the heating didnt really go on until last week so would take a guess that of that 42, 20 will be in the last 2 weeks.

Gas hob, used everyday, I have a shower using the combi, missus uses the leccy one in the ensuite :) Also Im at home all day due to working part time evenings, start full time work tomorrow so would expect that usage to stay similar through the colder months

Electric - 20 Jun - 23 Sep - 460kwh = £57.17 = Just under 5kwh a day at a guess, which isnt bad considering Im at home all day and there is 1 (generous) electric shower in the morning lol

Circumstances - 2 adults, 3 bed semi new build (and the dog ;) )

Is metered water billing quarterly like gas and elec? Cos if it is I pay more (£30 a month) for water than I do for gas and electricity (actual) combined :|
  • Well, this year's been a bit more heavy on the old pocket than 2009 so far:

I live in a 2 bed link detached with double glazing and cavity wall insulation.

What happened to the october reading? It explains the high november bill.

    Hello

We have lived in the same 3 bed mid-terrace for the past 6 years.
    We have an imperial meter.

Our average 12 month usage for the first 5 years in this address has been between 9,600 and 11,200 KWh. (300 to 350 x 32)

Our meter was changed in June 2010 by NPower - still an imperial meter but they had to change it "due to some legislation to keep meter's reasonably up to date or somethng".

From July 2010 to Dec 2010 we've used 16,000 KWh - when you add in Jan 2011 to June 2011 at the same rate we're looking at another 16,000 KWh which will would mean 32,000 KWh for the 12 months since the meter was changed.

For info - no change to our boiler, central heating system or cooker. Only change is meter (and usage obviously). And no -we can't smell gas ;-)

I telephoned Npower today to advise them something is wrong! We can't go from average of 10,000KWh to 32,000KWh - it's too bizarre.

To send someone to check the meter will cost me £90 although I was advised to take daily checks for the next 7 days as there's a chance they could send someone for free if usage stays high.

Not really sure what to do other than take the readings for the next 7 days and possibly write to Npower to explain something appears to be not quite right!

    Any suggestions please ?

    Thanks
  • The boiler is at the minimum setting. The thermostat is at 10 degrees. Radiators are all on frost setting. House is unoccupied. It is only on to prevent the pipes from freezing. Got a gas bill for £94 for 140 units over ten weeks.
  • Im just changing gas suppliers so have a bill for 19 units for 17 days to end jan, ive a small 2 bed.
I was away 5 of those days with boiler off, cost £29.24 british gas, just realising how expensive that is, glad ive changed
I have heating on from 4-5pm to 1-2am, not hot house either, 18C
  • Just had quarterly bill, from 9th nov to 3rd feb, £287.98 and 251 imperial units (7929.96kwh). Still £138 in credit though. DD currently £50, increasing to £77 from march :(

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
