Also may sound thick, but do you use more gas, when it is colder outside?
Yes.
If it's colder outside, it will be colder inside so the heating has to be on longer to get to the set temp. Think of it as boiling a kettle of cold water from the fridge rather than one of water that's at room temperature.0 -
Ive not read all 12 pages, just 1 and 11/12, seems the thread has gone more qualitative than quantitative as time goes on, so thought I would ask a question.
Situation :
Mid terrace, pre1930 build, from what I can see no insulation apart from the paint on the walls and new double glazing throughout. Thinks theres very little in the loft. New combiboiler / GCH system, all rads fitted with TRV's. Wireless CH controller. Gas used for instant hot water for all taps, electric cooking etc
Gas usage 29/05 - 04/09 : 29 units / 918kwh = 9.3 per day
Heating was used probly twice in this period
04/09 - 26/11 : 37 units / 1184kwh = 14.26 per day
Heating is on every day, usually set to 18C when we want it, which is 4pm - 9pm/10pm every night.
We are a young couple, g/f works full time and I am at uni.
Is this usage appropriate or is it likely I could reduce it anymore?

dannymccann - your usage seems reasonable to me. It's difficult to tell though as the weather has just gone colder.
I live in an old 2 bed terrace with virtually no loft insulation and a fairly rubbish old boiler - TRVs on some radiators and simples valves on others. I am finding at the moment I am using 3 units (imperial = 100s of cubic feet) per day which is about 94 kwh per day!! But if you had asked me at the beginning of September I would say I was using about 0.25 units per day (about 8 kwh). As an average yours seems reasonable. Can find out approximately what you're using per day now?0 -
Well you need to! Electric meters register kWh, however a unit on an imperial gas meter is approx three times as many kWh as a unit on a metric meter. Gas meter units mean nothing, it's the kWh used that you need to compare.
It's not even as straight forward as that.
1 imperial unit = 100 cubic feet of gas
1 metric unit = 1 cubic meter of gas0 -

Yes it is, an imperial unit (100 cu FT) is in the region of 32kWh and a metric unit (1 cu M) approximately 11kWh.
The only units that are of any use for comparison are kWh. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I have a similar question regarding meter reading and usage.
I have a 5 bed house - boiler for water/heating, gas hob and gas fire in one room although hardly being used.
I have taken a few readings as follows
1) With only the pilot light on for the boiler and gas fire the meter will clock up 1 unit (11kwh) every 53hrs (This based on measuring over 8hrs overnight when everything else is off and multiplying it up) - well being on Click6 that's still £10p/month using the tier 1 rate on the principle you have to have the pilot light on anyway).
2) Just running the boiler for water heat in the morning uses 1.7 units per hour.
I'm struggling to keep usage down so wrap up until the evening and just having it on 1hr in the morning and 3hrs in the evening would still mean around 7 units which isn't cheap.
Does this sound right? Granted I'm about to add more insulation in the loft -the house does have cavity wall insulation.
Thoughts welcomed.0 -
77kwh for a five bedroomed house sounds low to me.0

The tier 1 rate is on the first 125kWh per quarter or on 500kWh per annum. The average user consumes 20,000kWh per annum, therefore 97.5% is charged at the cheaper tier 2 rate.
Please explain why you think that your calculations should be done using the tier 1 rate? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

We have 5 bed house with full cavity / loft insulation and double glazed we have 4 children (although 1 at uni another with boyfriend alot but still has shower at home every day) my youngest son has been of ill all week and I have had to have the heating on all day I am using between 2.5 and 3.2 units (imp) 78-100kwh/day I also use immersion for hot water but my electric is higher at present 18units/day as tv on all day and dehumidifier.
If nobody at home then I was using about 63kwh but heating only on in morining for 1.5 hours and then 16:30-22:00. Again though electric average 13units.Look after the pennies and the pounds will spend themselves0 -
35.58 kwh (ours works out times just over 32) average over a 375 day period, 3 bedroom detatched house, 2 adults, 2 children. Gas appliances are combi, gas fire (unused) and gas hob. Washer is a dual fill and on frequently due to 2 special boys. Double glazed, icey cold but not heated conservatory, one room with single wall construction and no door between, no idea what insulation (rented house)One day I might be more organised...........
