We have 5 bed house with full cavity / loft insulation and double glazed we have 4 children (although 1 at uni another with boyfriend alot but still has shower at home every day) my youngest son has been of ill all week and I have had to have the heating on all day I am using between 2.5 and 3.2 units (imp) 78-100kwh/day I also use immersion for hot water but my electric is higher at present 18units/day as tv on all day and dehumidifier.
If nobody at home then I was using about 63kwh but heating only on in morining for 1.5 hours and then 16:30-22:00. Again though electric average 13units.
Why?.............. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
My reasoning was to simply try and establish of my meter is overcharging by racking up units faster than it should - So I was simply saying if everything else is off the 2 pilot lights would cost me £10 pm or £120p/a.

Hiya All,
Two bed ground floor flat. Just me, but I'm in all day.
Double glazed, thick curtains, reflectors behind rads.
Gas central heating and cooking, but use the microwave a lot.
9 year old boiler running 5 rads and hot water.
Winter timer set for 7:00am - 9:00am and 15:00pm - 22:30pm
Summer timer set for 7:00am - 9:00am and 16:00pm - 19:00pm
In winter will switch on heating for 7:00am to 22:30pm when really nippy.
Winter/Spring 2007/08 - average daily kwh usage = 55
Summer/Autumn 2008 - average daily kwh usage = 24
Has anybody learned anything from all these replies?
Take care all,

Space Rider,
This is what I have previously used. Its does seem that I'm using much less Gas than you in a property built in 1935 comapred with your new build. Must be down to having a better boiler/system. Unless anyone has any more ideas why I'm using less.
88kWh a day for
Heating on 24hours @ 21deg - 10 radiators all doubles.
Outside day temp 6deg Night temp 2deg.
We are 3 bed pre war semi
2 lots of loft insulation
Cavity wall insulation
All double glazed
I also cook with gas oven and hob and gas shower
A rated boiler - I think its 95% efficient something like that0 -
I stand corrected, what an expensive tariff, why do people pay so much? Their click 6 electricity tariff may be cheap for most but their gas certainly isn't!
It's always been the same in the Manweb area. BG good for elec and expensive for gas.
Scottish Power good for Gas and expensive for electricity.0 -
I've been looking into this since the end of summer- obviously gas prices vary, however I am using the guide price of 44p to have the ch on for 1 hour. now there are many variable to take into consideration-
temperature of home to begin with
desired temp to be reached
price you pay for gas
also calorific value of the gas depending on where you live, apparently (and I didn't realise this) some gas is "stronger" than others, a bit like the octane rating on petrol- more bang for your buck !
Since aug 23 to 23 nov I have used 67 units of gas. when it was still summer and no heating on I was using 3.5 units per week. now with the heating on I am averaging 6 units a week. I have 5 radiators on for approx 4 hours a day, 40 mins in the am and the rest in the eve when home from work.
Now I got the price of 44p per hour from a government website- I am sorry I cant remeber which one or I would have posted. I would also recomend that you join the i-measure website and put your utility metre reading in weekly to see your usage and to get a rough calculation of the cost, it will look someting like this-
Last week you spent:- £8.79 on gas
- £8.28 on electricity
- £73.52 on gas
- £104.04 on electricity
Now this makes me even more concerned.
1) I agree with 44p per unit or 11kwh (Although it depends on how many units a day you use - 44p is fine for around 7 per day go upto 10 units and it would come down to around 41p because you are using more at the lower tier2 rate)
2) With 13 radiators on for 4 hrs a day I am using 7units per day - you are using less in a whole week!! -albeit with 5 radiators
3) The measurement question is not keeping track of cost, more that the meter is saying I am using far more gas than I am actually using ie it's calibrated wrongly.
Does anyone know a way to get the meter checked without it costing the earth?
Many Thanks

While a faulty meter is a possibility, there are more likely explanations. To start with, are you converting your meter units to kwh correctly? You can get a reasonable estimate by multiplying by 11 for a metric meter or by 31 for an imperial meter.0 -
