Hello
I'm a little confused by this.
Can you please explain.
Should I leave the two wires coming off the street to the main socket, and remove wires coming from the main socket to the other socket in my house?
I don't see an orange and white wire, but there is an orange wire.
Thanks
Have you actually bothered to read this thread? It has been explained many times already and the colour of the wires is irrelevant! If you removed the two wires coming in from the street, what would that achieve? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Have you actually bothered to read this thread? As I explained already I had no intention of removing any wires coming in from the street, what would that achieve?
Most people on this site are helpful and friendly, but there's always one idiot, one patronsing, insulting little boy who thinks its clever to try to get one over on another poster.
Thankfully, the vast majorty of people on this site are good people who are happy to help, and I gues its sad show offs like this who make me appreciate how nice most people are.0 -
... it has been mentioned several times before which wire, you just need to find the slot number from this thread0

[sarcasm] but...but...there's a capital "I" in the name, it must be good!
Surely its much better to spend £15 on a shiny new plate than to cut a wire for free!!!??? [/sarcasm]
BTW, I cut my ring wire years ago, no I-plate here (or even BT master socket, but don't tell-em
The Master socket is there for your protection from lightning and surges. Your choice boss....
Pins 2 and 5 are the main ones you need. Pin 3 is the bell wire, only needed to slave extentions for the phone to ring.0 -
i do have a master socket, with the correct circuitry, just not a BT one (they don't do 'em in chrome
)

Agreed and most people are not lazy like you obviously are! All that you need to know has already been posted many times by many different posters in this thread and on various other threads but you simply can't be bothered to read the information provided.

This link may have been posted elsewhere on the forum, but it seemed appropriate for this thread:
http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm
The page describes the correct connections to use for master and extension sockets (as has been described numerous times in this thread!), and for connecting cables. It also describes the various alternative wire colours that might be encountered in telephone wiring.
It is from the excellent "Telephones UK" site which also includes an astonishing collection of historical material relating to phone equipment used in Britain.

Disconnecting the wire is a Good Idea!
Our extensions were connected by a plug (fitted by me) into the master socket, and I hadn't realised how much a difference the connection quality could make to our Broadband speed. (It was also connected through a dodgy BT 2-way adapter -- mid afternoon, our speed had dropped to 160kbps! - yes one hundred and sixty.)
Connecting directly to the test socket (using the plug) speed was 768 kbps.
After rewiring the extension to connect directly to the NTE5 faceplate, this time WITHOUT the bell wire...
1056 kbps!! (37.5% increase!)
...and definitely no need for the I-plate.

PS - Worringly, there was a slight difference between connecting the faceplate 'roughly' (without the screws) and fully (1088 vs 1056) -- is there something amiss with the master socket?0 -
try connecting directly to the test socket to completely rule out your extension as an issue, if you want to run a long cable, make it cat5 rather than phoneUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
