  • Seems like we're all shattered today.
I'm going to sleep long tomorrow and only get out of bed when I absolutely have to.

    Hope you're all OK.

Hey CWTA, S/E, BZ, Sharon and whoever may be interested - should we start a knitting/crochet thread?

I must admit that knitting and crocheting have changed me from being very definitely left handed to being much more ambidextrous :j. When I was about 5 or 6 I scalded my left hand quite badly involving a trip to hospital and lots of blisters and gauze bandage:o. I was encouraged to try to write with my right hand at school - just because of this accident, but I couldn't manage at all.

Once I started to learn knitting (my aunt sat me on her knee and guided the needles) I became a lot less 'left dominant'. She also taught me to crochet which I also do right handed. Mind you I have been told by people watching me that I am quite a comical sight (knitting-wise, before someone jumps in with a sarcy comment BZ:rolleyes::D) as my left hand still does all the work. I'd have to video it to share it with you :rotfl:.

CWTA - if you get stuck I don't know about the others, but feel free to ask and if I can help I will.

S/E - I have a book somewhere about knitinng from the top down - I got it for Christmaas last year, so I will look the title out for you. I also have one about knitting in the round to stop the tedious boring job of sewing up.

Popped out yesterday to drop off a baby cardi in a lace and bobble pattern for our mechanic's new baby girl. We've known him since he was a teenager and now he has his own business - a lovely man. Let's face it it's the only way I can see me getting to knit baby clothes in the near future!

Here's a link to my local wool shop which has some wonderful bargains and supplies via the net - look in 'clearance wools' as there are always plenty of really good bargains http://www.kempswoolshop.com/?gclid=CMm_-ImYkJMCFQZOMAodJGu_Yg if anyone else knows of similar places I would love to hear from you as I am always on the look out for wool.

Oh yes, I got the second front completed last night - so only the back, sleeves and collar to do. With a bit of luck I might still have it finished by Christmas. Here's the pattern http://www.kempswoolshop.com/pattern_details.aspx?selectedItemID=1067303277&picture=wendy5376&desc=Chameleon%205376 and this is the colour(s) I am using http://www.kempswoolshop.com/wool_details.aspx?selectedItemID=262767812

Bad Unity! I have a thing about wool - can never resist a good yarn. You have no idea how much much I've got stashed away in various places. You do realise that you've just triggered my addiction again, don't you?

Well, I got the neckband finished last night - all I've got to do now is decide which buttons I'm going to put on it and sew them on.

Then I've got to dig out one of the patterns I was using earlier in the year and replace the gorgeous cardi that I made, wore twice and totally ruined by forgetting it was hand wash only and putting it in the machine.

Does anyone else find they can no longer read a pattern accurately directly from the pattern? I've found the only way I can keep track of where I am is to transcribe it all to a sheet of A4 and work from that. At least I should still have that last cardigan in the pad I'm using so shouldn't need to write it all out again.

I try to be a bit disciplined with this and sew it up as I go along (oh and sew the ends in as I go, that's another tedious job), so I don't end up having to do too much sewing in one go.

Oh, and try to buy as big a ball of wool as I can - that saves a lot of faff with the ends.

Yippee another wool addict:T. I thought I was alone in this particular addiction and am so glad I am not :rotfl:. That Wendy yarn I mentioned was down to 99p per ball and I also got some Paton's Art at 69p. I refuse to pay full price for yarn - as some stuff is just ridiculous.

Yes I also have stashes in various places, along with half finished projects :o - although I have to say that they do all get finished eventually, it's just that sometimes I get the urge to knit something chunky and at other times it will be something fine. If I can save a lot on a particular brand of wool then I will add it to the stash and - sometimes forget about it .

I'm afraid I don't sew up as I go - but only because I like to block the pieces out and steam them so it helps to have everything done. I have tried knitting in the round with a great double-pointed knitting system I ordered from the U.S. All the needle sizes are included - plus a variety of different length cords so that you can knit anything from a pair of socks to a giant jumper .

Before I forget, I came across a new yarn in Kemps when I visited last week and it knits up in stocking stitch - but looks like a complete Fair-isle pattern! It is wonderful, but expensive so it would only be feasible for a child-sized jumper at present - but like all faddish yarns it is sure to come down in price sooner or later. look at Sirdar Yoyo - it used to be £17.50 a ball (a 400g ball if I recall but expensive all the same):p.

  • You do realise that I have no idea what you are talking about in the last few posts??! I am knitting illiterate still. I think I may leave lerning until the New Year. The pack I've bought to learn with knits up into a simple scarf in fancy bobbly wool, so at least I (in theory) should have something to show for my first attempt.

I am all knackered out here, so am going to do nothing at all today except read and be a couch potato. Helps to relax that the living room is lovely and organised now and bathroom is 90% done, which only leaves 2 other rooms to go. I think this cleaner is going to work out well.

My collecting obsession is bit of fabric that I have great plans to do wonderful things with. I'm lucky if they ever get made in even cushion covers.

Confession time. I'm a lazy so-and-so when it comes to that. I never block, and I never knit a tension square either. I just get on with it. I've even been known to leave errors in if they're not too visible. Didn't do it with this last one though. I kept gaining several stitches, so had to keep taking rows back (known as frogging to the uninitiated - as in rippit, rippit) to lose the surplus stitches.

A pity you don't live a bit nearer, or I could have given you a demonstration.

I'm glad it's gone well for you. It's amazing the difference having a bit of help with it all can have. I hope you pick up again soon.

Now that's where you've got me. I can just about manage putting buttons on, turning up hems, mending seams and sewing together jumpers and cardis. When it comes to 'proper' sewing I've got two right thumbs.

Same here, s/e. Life's too short for knitting tension squares.:p
