Bunnie thats the same thing me and OH have going on here, however we were told ICSI would be our best chance and its not so hugely dissimilar to IVF that it makes a huge amount of difference in procedure but gives you a better chance of producing better quality and more eggs to choose from for re implantation. OH has his final sperm test tomorrow and have had him on zinc and multi vits too for the last 2/3 months so will see how that goes. Although doc did say even if they had improved would still be doing ICSI as its our best chance. Don't stress about percentages too much, I believe the chances are 25% across the board anyway. I guess we must be really lucky with our clinic/doc/nurse as everyone has been really good so far. Bunnie do what you think is best, but if I had the choice would still opt for ICSI to give best chance.

I suppose different clinics have different protocols, but after our last treatment, when the embryologist said that they'd managed straight forward IVF,which is decided on the day,(instead of the predicted ICSI),I asked if we would have been better off having ICSI ? She said" no,as long The sperm meets the criteria, there is no advantage to performing ICSI".
There is also a slightly higher risk of congenital disability in babies conceived by ICSI.

AS I understand it,ICSI is performed when there is insufficient "good" sperm to "take a chance" that they'll actually penetrate the egg and fertilise it,so they inject an individual sperm directly into each egg, instead of letting them do it themselves !!! Basically,if on the day,if the embryologist thinks that OH's swimmers are "doing what they should be " and are capable of penetrating the egg there is no need to perform the procedure and it will not give a better implantation rate.

The HEFA website gives individual clinic success rates and is well worth a look, they also do a really good free guide to infertility which you can either download or request.

The percentages of sperm that passed the tests is not all that far below the norm. For the 'swim up' test the consultant said the norm was 15% and DH was 9%

I don't think we could emotionally deal with IVF/ICSI so currently looking at options to improve sperm quality - there were differences in DH's tests with the second one being better so there has to be a way to improve/change things surely?

    Hi everyone,
I'm out of this game for a few months now unfortunatley. I had to go for a colposcopy yesterday on the understanding that my smear in Jan didn't yield any results (which I thought was strange). When I got there I found that my results actually showed severely abnormal cells for which they did a biopsy. After the results (which I should get in about 4 weeks time) they think I'll have to have the cells, which were quite extensive apparently, cut out under general anasthetic and they advised me not to ttc until it's all sorted.

Needless to say yesterday was a total washout emotionally. I know the odds of it being serious are minimal, but there's still a certain amount of worry. I was more upset by being told not to ttc!

I'll be keeping an eye on all of your progress, and will pop in to let you know how things go my end.

Bunnie - re vitamins, Vit C, zinc, folic acid, L'arginine and selenium ACE are what DH takes and they improved his sperm count and motility no end in 6 months.

    Good luck xx

    Nikkinoo,
sorry to hear your news, I'm sure all will be fine but the frustrations of having another obstacle put in your way for TTC must be tough. Keep us posted and hopefully you'll be back here ttc with the rest of us soon!

    Bunnie,
You're sounding more positive today, good for you. My only advice would be to never settle for 1 opinion! Try the diet and vitamins approach for dh and se if that makes a difference. If it doesn't and they recommend the IVF route then ask for a second opinion, if you can afford a private consultation yourself it may be more worthwhile as you will see the specialist straight off and they may be more able to give alternative options and advise what is best for you.

    Gymfriend,
I totally sympathis with you on th ewhole hospital thing! It's one thing to have these dam tumours in the first place but it's quite another when dr's/hospitals lose routine test results! My first full set of blood test where they do that awful cortisone injection then repeat the tests half an hour later were lost so I had to go and have them all done again. So that was 3 hours of wasted time because the first time had to wait for an hour as wasn't expected at where I'd been told to go, second time same thing then they forgot about me and I had to go and find someone to come back and do the second tests after the injection. My first prolactin check test was done at the gp's and they sent the results to the wrong hospital and it's always down to us to chase things! I swear if I didn't ring my consultant and ask what dosage I should be on after latest tests etc he would never contact me! It just all adds to the agrivation of the whole thing. Keep chasing them and hopefully you'll get your answers soon.
