LadyM. I agree which is why i say stemming from being fat, drug or alchol dependancey not because of medication being taken for an illnesss. I get DLA for mental health problems and i am 3 stone overweight due to the medication i am on. It is more important to take the medication than lose weight.

I'm glad that someone agrees with me. I also get DLA for mental health problems. I know that some ADs can make people put on weight. My friend put on 4 stone whilst on them, without changing her exercise or diet habits.

I think sometimes people are too quick to say "You're overweight so that must mean you have no self control or are greedy" etc. The truth of the matter is that there are loads of reasons that someone may be overweight. It's not just about food.

I`m sorry but that simply isnt true what you say about 10 metres,it depends on what your problems are and how they affect you, nothing to do with any set distance
I agree that it depends on your problems and how they affect you, but if you can walk for 10 metres or more on a bad day without stopping, it's unlikely that you'll get the mobility component. Just what the WRO told me.
If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!

Does that include getting the mobility component for mental health reasons?

I was awarded lower rate mobility due to anxiety when I am out alone and sometimes needing someone with me. Also, because I get confused if a place is unfamiliar to me and start having anxiety attacks.

  • LadyM. I also get lower rate mobility for mental health problems. It is a different chiteria than for the higher rate. I also get lower rate care. I think mine is about right. I always say apply and just see what happens. I have just helped my son apply as he has the same mental health problem as me(scitzo-affective disorder) I don't know if he will get it as we did not have any supporting letters to send in because he has only just gone under the mental health team. But if you don't try you don;t get as they say. The OP should apply getting as much supporting evidence as possible to include with the application form and cross their fingers. Good luck i say. I wonder if people would consider an anorexic as self-inflicted. I find it amazing that people fall over themselves to help people with this condition but not those who are over-weight. I begged for medication to help me reduce my weight but no, i am not over-weight enough.

I'm anorexic and the only help I get is regular weigh ins with the doctor. My BMI is 16. The reason why the ED clinic wouldn't help me? Because I had already had CAT and it was unsuccessful in dealing with my flashbacks and that would be the only thing they would offer me and apparently if CAT hasn't been unsuccessful the first time, then it the chances of it being effective a second time are minimal.=/ I'm open about my problems on here to some people, as I don't know any of you so it's easier. Many people in real life don't know I have anorexia. I also have Borderline Personality Disorder, OCD and anxiety/agoraphobia.
I started off on low mobility and middle rate care then I was upped to higher rate care because I am far worse than I used to be. I would give anything to be of a "normal" mentality. I feel guilty for being this way. I hope that one day I will be so much better and I can go out there and say "World, this is me, and you haven't seen anything yet" and get out there and do what I love.

Many people exaggerate on the DLA form. I would advise that nobody does this. Just tell it like it is. I've heard that some people are told to just describe their worst days but this doesn;t provide an accurate account of your mobility and care needs. In general people have good and bad days so just describe both your good and bad days as they are. Did that make sense? I'm rambling.lol.
You will always fail, if you never try. There's no harm in applying for DLA and if they turn you down, then you haven't lost anything but by not applying you could lose money which you are entitled to. :)

Posters such as this make me angry, this is self inflicting,I know what I want to say and Im sure I will be shot down in flames for saying this but basically im trying to get DLA for my son who has an ASD,he was born with this and cannot help the way he is,he has been turned down for DLA yet someone whos overweight could get DLA and most of the problems ie asthma, depression,no mobility etc stem from this fact of being overweight, perhaps if people like this went on a strict diet to get their BMI down then all the other ailments would dissapear its a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, unfortunately other people arnt so lucky and can learn to live with their disabilities but not cure them,my son would love that chance I just wish people such as this poster could realise exactly just that, they can do something about their problem as it is self inflicted and to put it in a nutshell will not get better unless they loose weight and stop eating and increase their excersise.

Posters like you make me angry also. You've been extremely judgemental about this poster when you know absolutely nothing about them or their medical history. Obesity is not always simply a result of over-eating/lack of exercise, their are numerous other factors that could be taken into account.

Maybe I should apply the same judgement to you and accuse you of being a sink estate single parent trying to scrounge benefits? After all, with a user name such as yours plus claiming your son has ASD when he's probably just an unruly, out of control, undisciplined scrote fits the stereotypical profile doesn't it?

See how easy it is?

i really think people should choose there words more kindly and have some consideration for a human being
