Have you tried it yet? My Tesco still has it in stock so I bought a packet today-if it's ok I'll buy more. I think it's reduced because it has "Christmas Sausagemeat" on the packet-not because there's anything wrong with it

    sausage and egg pie.
Line a loaf tin with shortcrust.
fill 1/3rd deep with sausage meat.Add enough peeled hard boiled eggs to reach to the ends(you can cut off the domed ends if you dont want a gap in the egg) Infill with more sausage meat and cover with same. Put on a pastry lid and seal. Cook a good 45 mins in a hot oven(may need adjustment as I always guess). When cold,it will slice and each slice will have a circle of egg in the centre.

    Scotch eggs.
4 hard boiled eggs. 1 pack of sausage meat.Breadcrumbs and one beaten egg.
Wrap each peeled egg in 1/4 of the sausage meat using hands.Smooth round and make sure the sausage is sealed. Roll in beaten egg and drop in a bag of breadcrumbs. When you have 4 ,deep fry in oil for about 10 minutes.Drain on kitchen paper.Serve hot or cold.(cold is nicer).Or oven bake for about 30 mins at 200c
  • not a recipe, but instead a bit of advice.

DO NOT BUY 19p SAUSAGE MEAT

heaven knows how they get away with calling it MEAT!

It did not originally cost 19p, it is left over from their christmas stock so heavily reduced. For anyone thinking of trying it ( I think theres loads in stock still) it is actually quite nice. Going to try and get some more as use by date is not until August.

  • Given that you've already bought it and will be using it up in true OS style, here are a couple of ideas which go down well with my family:
Sausage and carrot pasta sauce. Chop a large onion and fry gently in a bit of olive oil. Add about a pound of sausagemeat and break it up into small chunks, fry with the onion gently. Add several large handfuls of grated carrots, one tin of chopped tomatoes, and about half a pint of stock. Add a glug of worcestershire sauce or balsamic vinegar and let the whole thing simmer for about an hour until the sauce goes all gloopy and the carrots have broken down a bit. Tastes utterly fab with pasta, and even my kids who don't like carrots will eat this.

Another idea is from a very old Woolworths recipe book that my mum still uses (although the pages are pretty much stuck together now!) - it's called French forcemeat but it's basically sausage & chestnut stuffing. You can still get bags of frozen chestnuts in Sainsburys, I think. Fry up about a pound of sausagemeat and break it into pieces. Remove from pan, add a good knob of butter and fry the (already boiled and skinned, or defrosted) chestnuts - again, about a pound is right - until they go a bit brown round the edges. Break them up a bit in the pan, and add a small tin of ham, chopped, or a gammon steak, chopped. Remove when cooked and add to the sausagemeat. Add a tablespoon of flour to the remaining butter & juices in the pan (adding more butter if you need it). Add a couple of tablespoons of brandy when the flour has cooked a bit, then add a pint or so of hot chicken stock and stir over low heat until it's gone like a sauce. Taste and add salt and pepper if it needs it, bearing in mind the ham is already quite salty. Put the chestnuts, sausagemeat and ham into the sauce, give it a stir and bake in the oven for half an hour. Serve, if you're anything like my family, directly from the oven and stand well back to avoid the crush. It also goes well with most roasts !

People have already beaten me to it with suggestions of meatloaf or meatballs!

I sometimes use it to stuff a chicken, mixed in with chopped onion, breadcrumbs and dried herbs to give it more flavour if it's the cheap sort. Serve some of the stuffing with the roast dinner, then set aside the rest till the next day. Then I make hash with it - fried onion, boiled potatoes, the sausage leftovers and a tin of baked beans. Slosh some Worcester sauce and mustard into it and simmer till it's all heated through and a bit squidgy. Makes a nice meal on its own but you could add veggies for vitamin content.

I was going to suggest combining lentils and sausage because it's a classic combination, then I googled for sausage+lentil and found this site! I know it is for proper sausages but perhaps you could adapt some of the recipes.

Sausagemeat is a favourite at our house, Tesco's is not spicy which is probably why we like it, but you can easy spice it up. We just carefully take it out of the tubes it comes in, slice it into 1/2" slices and either dry fry or grill it. A little flour when doing it helps it not to stick. Oh! sausagemeat egg beans and chips, if only I was not back on Atkins!

Season it well, roll into a sausage shape and use it to stuff minute steak or boned chicken thighs. Yummy with caramelised onion gravy.

Or roll into walnut sized balls, fry and serve with pasta sauce.
