    Background information

Children's Tax Credit was an Income Tax relief introduced from 6 April 2001 to provide more help for people who had a child or children aged under 16 living with them. Children's Tax Credit was available for two years 2001-02 and 2002-03. It was then replaced by the Child element of the new payable Tax Credits from 6 April 2003.
Children's Tax Credit was well publicised prior to its commencement and all existing recipients of Married Couple's Allowance, Additional Personal Allowance and Widow's Bereavement Allowance received mail shots about the alternative relief. HMRC (we were then the Inland Revenue) also ran extensive press and TV advertising and for new claimants the new mothers' Bounty Pack had claim forms included.
Children's Tax Credit reduced the amount of income tax you paid. The maximum relief for 2002-03 was £5290 at 10% or £10490 at 10% if a child was born during the 2002-03 tax year. This gave a tax saving of £529.00 or £1049.00. Children's Tax Credit was claimed by the person within a couple (married or unmarried) who had the highest income. Single parents could also claim. It was tapered away at the rate of £2 of Children's Tax Credit for £3 of income that exceeded the basic rate income tax threshold (£29,900). So the higher your income the less Children's Tax Credit became due.
  • Hi
i sent off for this before the cut off date, i have since forgotten all about it, my daughter just asked me if i heard anything and so thought i would look it up, i know i sent it recorded delivery and have since sorted out the bits and bobs in my handbag and may have thrown the receipt away believing it was for something else,
should i have heard anything at all by now?? think i may ring them tomorrow to see what they have to say, just thought i would ask as i came across moneysupermarket
    thanks
  • Hi All
Not sure if anyone can help me, I applied for the Children's Tax Credit Refund as my eldest son was born in January 2003 however, I did not apply directly to the tax office, I went through a claim company. Not sure how I even came across it, just browsing and typed in tax credit and a link came up saying "you could be entitled to £1040". I have phoned the tax office and they have no record of the claim on my NI number so hubby just phoned and they don't have any record on his NI number.... Anyone got any thoughts as to if my claim has not been passed on or if it takes longer to process due to path it has taken:confused::confused::confused:

Wish I had gone direct to tax office now but heho can't do anything about it now.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jo;)

  • In reply to swanseafemale, I am in the same situation they didn't receive my form. They asked me to send a letter with mine and my partners national insurance numbers and child's date of birth. I have received another letter today asking me to also send in both mine and my partners p60's for that year.
I don't know if a copy will be OK or if they will want the original. I will ring the office on Monday

    Hope this helps

I was looking at the HM Revenue and Customs website, probably back in January and there was a link on there for you to claim 02/03 tax credits, unfortunately I was directed to a company called The Entitlements Agency, who I thought at the time were something to do with HM Revenue and Customs, this was not the case. We put a claim in through this company, they received £618.38. We got a letter from HM Revenue and Customs to say that they had paid our allowance, on the 27th July to our nominees, The Entitlements Agency. I did not hear anything for a while so tried to ring the Agency, there is no phone number, so I posted a letter recorded delivery and have today 14th September received £424.94 they took a fee of £94.00, interest of £74.21 and VAT of £25.23, which I find totally unacceptable. If I had just picked the phone up and dealt with HM Revenue and Customs myself I would have saved £193.94. I am very cross.
